Public Preview (IE 7 Beta 2)

Start here: Internet Explorer 7: Beta 2 Preview. Make sure to read theInternet Explorer Developer Center: Release Notes for Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview. The servers are being hammered right now. So, you may have trouble getting a download. Be persistent.

I've been running Beta 1 for a while now. It has worked well. We could certainly get into a discussion about who has the most bug ridden anything - browser, OS, etc. You can read Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta 2 Public Preview Review for more information.

You're right about the bugs. I just ranted about that in another reply, actually! Paul Thurrott's review was one I read with great interest, because he's brutally honest. For me, however, it will largely be a matter of whether I want to change my ways as I've been using Firefox for quite some time now.

I may be gun-shy, but the last thing I want is a beta of the most bug-ridden browser around! Seriously, though, I am curious to see how Microsoft has improved the product. The tabbed browsing implementation looks to be a winner; I just hope the thumbnailed view that is present in the Vista betas makes it into the other versions of the browser.

I will remain skeptical of IE's security model until time proves that it's been fixed.

Re: Public Preview (IE 7 Beta 2)

    Joe,
I had tried Beta 1 when it first came out and while it seemed to run OK, I ran into a BIG problem in that some of my sites ( like my banking site ) did not recognize the version 7 beta and said that I needed to "upgrade"
( or downgrade ) in order to access the site properly.
So...out went Beta 1 until some webmasters or site designers realize that they should keep current with the versions out there.

My first impression is take a look. It is much more polished than Beta 1. You don't have to make it your everyday browser to try it. Don't know how much you'll have to change anyway.

    Bob,

I'd ugess you'll most likely run into the same problems with Beta 2. Although by now you'd think that sites would be getting updated as they know IE7 is coming.

I guess I'll just have to play it cool for a while and hold off on Beta2.

You've convinced me (took a lot of effort eh?) to try it out. Installation was very straightforward, but now the real fun begins. I suspect I will be missing AdBlock...

This functionality has been in the FF Tabbrowser Extensions add-in for a long time.

N.B. If you search on this Board, you will find Loungers expressing problems with this extension. As a very longterm user, I have never had the problems mentioned but I install very few extensions. I also don't know whether the reported problems persist with the current versions of both FF and the extension.

(Edited by Waggers on 01-Feb-06 13:40. )
Thanks Joe, that's a very useful review. Having read it, it looks like IE7 contains some handy new features - I particularly like the zoom thing, which I reckon will be quite hard to replicate in Firefox. However, of the features that IE7 has that Firefox currently lacks, that (and the related Quick Tabs) is the only one that grabs me as something I wish Firefox could do, and will be challenging for someone to write as an extension. My conclusion is the similar to that in the article: it's not enough to convince me to switch to - or even download and try - IE7.

The new security features that will come with Vista look good, especially "Protected Mode" - but again, I reckon it will only be a matter of time before Firefox catches up.

Now I'm off to see if I can find a Firefox extension that mimics the "Tab Group" feature
Edit: actually I don't need to. "Bookmark all tabs" is already an option in Firefox, and will put all the open tabs into a bookmark folder. You can then open all the bookmarks in a folder at the same time using "Open in tabs". I just hadn't bothered using it before!

Re: Public Preview (IE 7 Beta 2)

You're right, of course. Also, there are a number of FF extensions that emulate IE7's "Quick Tabs" (thumbnail viewing of open tabs). So the only real difference is that zoom function, and I can live without that.

Re: Public Preview (IE 7 Beta 2)

Out of interest I installed IE7 Beta 2 and found that it wrecked all my favicons in the favorites list. They all reverted to the standard IE icon. Even using the software program 'favorg' they wouldn't restore. Not a vital bug but very annoying when one gets used to a set of icons.

I had noticed this too. I'd urge you to post your feedback to MS by going to the IE & newsgroup link at Internet Explorer 7: Beta 2 Preview checklists. BTW, there is already a post saying that MS is aware of this issue and will fix it.
