Slow File Moves (PRO, Fully Patched)

I installed a SATA drive in my PC a few weeks ago, and after running it as my boot drive OK for a couple weeks, started moving files onto it from my old pair of IDE drives. Transfer speeds seemed awful slow, but yesterday took the cake: took 16 hours to transfer a single folder with 6GB of files. PC is no slouch: Athlon 3000+ with 1GB of RAM. Not doing anything else during these transfers. What might be wrong?

Have you looked in the Processes tab of Task Manager to see which process, if any, is hugging the processor during the transfer?

Assuming that the old drives have been scanned for viruses and other malware, you might try disabling anti-virus and anti-spyware applications during the transfer (turn off your internet connection while doing so!)

Are your old drives still in the same PC as the SATA drive?

    HansV,

    >> Have you looked in the Processes tab of Task Manager to see which process, if any, is hugging the processor during the transfer? <<

I just started a transfer and looked, and the top 3 processes (in terms of resources being used) were explorer.exe, vsmon.exe, and svchost.exe. None of them using what I think of as "large" amount of resources (compared to MS Outlook, for instance).

Yeah, I wondered if they could be causing this problem.

Then, I agree with Hans about disabling A/V, etc. Have as little as possible running when you are doing the copy.
