Disabling auto updates in Firefox (Firefox 1.5)

I've never enabled automatic updates in any version of Firefox, so I was rather surprised that 1.5.0.1 was automatically downloaded today. And I was informed that the update would be automatically installed next time I started Firefox.

I guess the installation of 1.5 defaults to allowing automatic updates.
That is totally unacceptable.

I've deleted the downloaded files, but I want to verify which settings I need to change to prevent automatic downloading and preventin the automatic installation of ANYTHING.

Is the following sufficient?

Set app.update.autoInstallMode to 2
Set app.update.autoUpdateEnabled to False
Set app.update.Enabled to False

What about app.update.nagTimer?
Anything else?

I ended up using.

user_pref("app.update.auto", false);
user_pref("app.update.autoUpdateEnabled", false);
user_pref("app.update.disable_button.showUpdateHis tory", false);
user_pref("app.update.enabled", false);
user_pref("app.update.lastUpdateTime.addon-background-update-timer", 1138879000);
user_pref("app.update.lastUpdateTime.autoInstallMo de", 2);
user_pref("app.update.lastUpdateTime.background-update-timer", 1138879000);
user_pref("app.update.lastUpdateTime.restart-nag-timer", 1138882600);
user_pref("app.update.nagtimer.download", 1138882600);

Re: Disabling auto updates in Firefox (Firefox 1.5

Hi Howard, whenever I change the version of a program I always try and verify that the update settings haven't changed. Firefox 1.5 seems to enable automatic downloads which I dislike. However, if you go to Tools - Options and select the update tab there are some checkboxes that can be unchecked. So far Firefox hasn't tried to automatically download anything. I manually updated to version 1.5.0.1 today after reading about it in one of the GRC forums. Incidentally, it took me a post to the Mozila Firefox support board a while ago to find the way to manually update. I hadn't noticed the "Check for updates.." from the help menu. That gives a disconcerting message since after checking it says, "Firefox may periodically check for updates". Of course, there should be no may about it because I've disabled automatic updates. I think the wording is sloppy and shouldn't be there at all. Anyway, it seems that Firefox is behaving itself and only checking updates when I ask it to. It then gives me the choice as to whether to install any updates found or not.

Have you bothered to search the Mozilla forums on this topic? These settings are well documented.

These settings are pretty well self-explanatory within Firefox itself too Mark (Tools>Options>Advanced), as <!profile=Cah>Cah<!/profile> has pointed out. I have my settings configured to "Ask me what I want to do" when updates to Firefox are found. This morning a message popped up informing me of this newest version, indicated what extensions would be disabled, and asked me whether or not I wanted to download and install it . Amazing - worked just like it was supposed to . Hard to imagine that any experienced user would not bother to look at these settings, not change them from the default if desired, and then complain that this behaviour was "unacceptable" .

I'd have to agree with you, John. I go through most, if not all, configuration options with new software immediately following the installation so that I know what is under my direct control and what isn't. More often than not the defaults are not exactly what I want and I end up changing a few things.

I also think that for the average person who does not have a technical background, this configuration is more than acceptable - it's a calculated move that is intended to prevent support issues that arise from having an outdated version of the software.

Yes, folks, my Firefox was not automatically updated!

The settings on Tools|Options|Advanced|Updates had none of the boxes checked.

Following a very long established practice, I pasted in virtually all (but not quite all) of the contents of prefs.js from the previous installation.

FTR the relevant part of the file reads:
user_pref("update.extensions.autoUpdate", true);
user_pref("update.lastUpdateDate", 1375609856);
user_pref("update.severity", 2);

I'm not at all surprised by the outcome.

Re: Disabling auto updates in Firefox (Firefox 1.5

And I couldn't agree more with you, so true. When installing any software I go through the settings and with major updates (as the prior FF - 1.0-1.5) also, since default settings may have changed, however, after a small one like this I have not actually done it.

I have my settings as John; to ask me what I want to do. This update was my (our?) first experience with the new update system, and when the update message came I was in the middle of some web posting, so I declined and later clicked Help - Check for updates, it worked perfectly. The update files, before closing FF and install, looked a bit odd; no file extension.

Speaking of programs updating themselves; if one like to do it manually, take a look at Windows Media Player: three alternatives: day, week, and month. You have to edit the registry to stop the program from searching for updates. Firefox is easy to configure when compared!
