Insert File Grayed Out (Word 2000)

I'm not sure when it happened, but Insert File is no longer available to me in Word. I thought it might be our new Hummingbird DM integration, but everyone else in the office still has the functionality. I tried to look through some .DOT add-in files, but couldn't find anything. I even turned off a lot of .DOT files to see if there was something loading and turning off the menu item, but that didn't work either. Any ideas on what I ought to look for? Should I "repair" Word and try that? Is there some command line in a macro that I might be looking for that says something like "insert file menu item = false"??

    Thx.

Is the document protected in any way?

Try disabling all the add-ins and see whether that makes a difference.

Insert File is grayed out on ALL docs regardless of whether or not they are protected. I tried disabling all add-ins and that didn't help either. I think I'll reinstall to see if that works.

    Thx.

(Edited by HansV to provide link to post - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

Hi there. I had items greyed out under certain menu items and doing a regedit and deleting the data key restored the full menu items. See <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.

You could try Tools > Customize > Reset... to see if this restores your correct menu functionality.

If I use Customize Reset, will that wipe out any buttons I've added to the standard toolbars? I probably should have created a special toolbar, but instead I edited the standard one. I'm afraid my changes will get wiped out if I use Reset.

    Thx.

Yes, it will reset the toolbars to their default configuration. But this sounds like a less extreme step then a complete reinstall, and the complete reinstall may not help without the reset anyway!

    Patricia,

Thanks for the reference to the other post. That helped. I've pretty much determine I must have a corrupt normal.dot. For a while, I was keeping a separate backup of it as I made changes, but I don't have any recent ones. Oh well. I'll just have to recreate my toolbars and possibly save them somewhere else this time.

    Thx.
