DVD drive

I just brought a DVD recorder drive (Plextor). I installed the Nero 6 suite software that came with the drive. I then tried to PLAY a few DVD's but can't do it. I get the following message:

Due to patent license restrictions, MPEG-2 encoding/decoding/playback is not available. This feature can be added by installing the DVD-Video Plug-in.

I tried the same DVD's w/WMP and also got a message about needing a DVD decoder.

How can I make these DVD's play on the PC? Do I have to by a full software suite?

You will need a DVD decoder to play DVD content. Since no version of Windows comes with the appropriate decoder, you have a few options:

Purchase a DVD playback program, such as WinDVD or PowerDVD, which will install a DVD decoder along with the program
Purchase the Windows Media DVD Decoder Pack
Hunt via search engines for a free decoder[/list]Your best bet is to get a DVD playback program. The free stuff is not going to guarantee a quality experience.

Did your Nero suite come with Nero Showtime? It is the equivalent of WinDVD or PowerDVD. You may need to go to the Nero (Ahead Software http://www.nero.com/us/download.html ) and update. While you are updating you may wish to add some audio codecs as well found at http://www.bitburners.com/Nero_Audio_Plugins/ and a few more odds and ends found at http://neroplugins.afterdawn.com/ . You also should check your file associations. Happy downloading.

    Re: DVD drive

Yes, it came with Nero Showtime and I thought that would make it play. But instead Nero wants me to pay another $60 or so to get some upgrade because it is in MPEG-2 format. Doesn't seem right if all I am doing is trying to PLAY pre-recorded DVD's which I own already. I guess this software only supports MPEG-1 format on DVD?

I will check out the downloads you point to.
