    Shareware to record from Computer

    Hi!

I'm looking for shareware that people have tested and like that will record a pretaped webex training that will run on my computer.

    Thanks,
    Leesha

I've read your post a few times and I'm afraid I am not clear on what you mean by "pretaped webex training." Is this an online class? Streaming video? Something else?

Re: Shareware to record from Computer

    Hi Mark,

The training was pre-recorded (sound and video) and it viewed via webex training. I can't answer whether it is sreamed or not. I'm looking for software (ideally at no cost) that will record whatever is playing on my desktop so I can capture the training. Once I've captured it I have software to convert it and make it into a DVD. I just need to get it. It's to be used for training.

    Thanks,
    Leesha

Is this your training class? If not, it may be a copyright infringement to record the class. Why can't you just use WebEx for the training?

It is a training that we were part of and have all the handouts etc. for. Copyrighting is not a concern. It is a timelimited training and my goal is to use the information for staff for orientation on an ongoing basis and so webex isn't practical.

Leesha, if it is timelimited, you don't have permission to use it on an ongoing basis, do you? I suspect copyrighting SHOULD be a concern for you.

it is timelimited because it is going to contain data that builds on previous sessions. They are paying for the space and the costs go up to them the longer is left on the site. Copyrighting is not an issue. It is a train the trainor type of presentation and is done through webex to cut down on agency cost and travel to go to the lectures.

I'm still not clear on what "webex" is, copyright concerns or not. Before you can look for any kind of software that will enable you to capture the audio/video bits, you first need to determine how it is sent. If it's a file that you download and play in a proprietary player, that's a lot different than a WMV stream coming over your connection.

Can you provide a link/example of any kind? This would help solve both the copyright question/concern and help us help you find a solution.

The file is not downloaded (that would make my life easier as then I could convert it and I'd be all set) but rather is viewed on the webex site. I can't give you the exact link to the class as that is password protected only for the users, of which we are one. The webex site is webex.com.

I'm assuming its streamed. In doing a google search I've come up with a few possiblities which I will test and report back on their effectiveness. I posted here in hopes that someone else had already found and tested software.

    Mark,

WebEx is a Web Conferencing, Online Meetings, and Video Conferencing site. A company subscribes to the service, sets up and organizes a site. It is similar to and a competitor of MS Live Meeting.

No worries, I went to the WebEx website and played with their demo. It's a combination of a Java applet and other scripting that makes the whole thing work - hence, it's proprietary. If you want to record anything there, I guess you're going to need something that will capture what is actually happening on your PC's desktop, and I can't make any recommendations for something like that. <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15> I've never had a need to record user activity before.

Check the support area of the site. There should be links to the WebEx recorder and player.

Let your conscience be your guide. You can download CamStudio v2.0 to do the deed. v2.1 will require an activation code, but there is a link to v2.0 half-way down the page and that is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>.
