    .mdw files (97 SR-2)

    Hi

I've created a new .mdw file to access my db for security purposes, together with a shortcut that references the .mdw file so that the password prompt only occurs when the users access the db via the shortcut.

My problem is that if I try to open a new instance of Access in the normal way (i.e. not via the shortcut), the prompt still appears. I have gone back into the workgroup manager and 'joined' the .mdw file that was already there (before the one I created) but this seems to have no effect.

    What I am doing wrong??

    TIA <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Sounds like you've got passwords set up (probably accidentally) in your original workgroup.

I have a related problem which I am going to tag onto this thread -- I have one database which requires security, but if I go to workgroup administrator and join the system.mdw firl for it, then I have to give my username and password for every database, even if they don't have security. Is there a way to make the login appear only for the one database that requires it? Thanks.

Yes. Don't use Workgroup Administrator to join a workgroup unless you want it to be your default workgroup. Use a shortcut to your database instead, with the workgroup included in the shortcut.

As a real-life example, one of my database shortcuts has as its target

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeMSACCESS.EXE" "M:MyDocsSecured DatabasesB25-LG-304B25-LG-304.mdb" /wrkgrp "M:MyDocsSecured DatabasesDataman.mdw"
