XP - Select the OS to Start (XP SR2)

After reloading Windows XP from scratch, I receive the following message when booting:

Please select the Operating System to Start

    Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

The first of the two lines is highlighted, and after about 30 seconds the startup continues. Since I am using a wireless keyboard and the message occurs before the USB drivers have loaded, I just have to wait for the time to elapse.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

P.S. I reloaded XP due to a missing hal.dll file problem that could not be resolved through the repair console functions.

Right Click 'My Computer' and select Properties

    Advanced > System Startup >
    and de-select "Time to display..."

Also in Leif's graphic example, if you'll click that EDIT button to look at your Boot.Ini file, I think you'll find that you have TWO operating system entries, most likely exactly alike. One of them can be deleted and the problem will go away.

PS Just for safety, when you open that file, you might want to save a dupe of it under another name, just in case. But, when it happened to me, eliminating one of the entries made the "selection" screen go away.

    Thanks Leif and Big Al.

There were two entries in my boot.ini file:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Micros oft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS="Micros oft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Before editing, I rebooted and selected the second line (see OP) and the boot failed. So I edited the second line out of the boot.ini file and now all appears well.

I really appreciate the helpfulness of the loungers. Thanks again.

Weird how these things happen, huh? In my case, the two entries were exactly alike. Glad you got 'r done!
