    Numbering in styles (Word 2003)

I am working with documents that have styles set up with automatic numbering. When I use the save button the numbering goes away or changes to different numbers. This will print if I do not scroll up and then back down. Is there a way to fix this? I never had this problem with the last version my office used.

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

    What a strange problem!
Have you changed anything in your setup recently (for example installed or removed a Word add-in, updated to a new version of software, ...)?
Does the problem occur under all circumstances, or only when you have lots of other documents and/or applications open?

Yes, I was just changed from office XP to Office 2003, including Word 2003. I am testing the software before the rest of the office is changed.

It is a random occurrence. It is not dependent on what other things I have open. I tend to only have Word, Excel, and Outlook open. And any where from 1 to 3 documents usually.

    Hi Trace,

Check if "Tools > Templates and Add-Ins > Automatically update document styles" is checked.
In that case, the styles are copied from the attached template each time you open the doc (rather than on Save as you assumed), and with numbered styles, this can wreak havoc.

It is not checked. I'm at a loss here.

In case it's some weird document corruption: Could you post a small sample file?
Mild forms of corruption can often be "cured" by saving in XML format (... or RTF/HTML in older versions).

A more unlikely possibility might be a buggy printer driver. It would be strange that it affects (only) the numbering.

The last thing that I could think of would be that some (buggy) customization is responsible...
Although, the fact that scrolling in the document fixes things makes that unlikely.
Does the problem go away in "safe mode" (... hold down the Ctrl key while you start Word)?
