    Anchor management for graphics (97 & 2003)

I am nearly ready to give up - I am so frustrated trying manage text and keeping graphics in line. there is a little anchor that appears when I select the graphic but I cannot understand how to use it. Just when I think I have the graphic positioned where I want it relative to the paragraph, it disappears to somewhere and I have to close the file without saving, then reopen so I can find my graphic.

Can anyone offer any guidance on how to manage these graphics? is there a way to "LOCK" it in place one line below a paragraph so that I as I edit the document, the graphic will move according to the paragraph? This means that if there is not enough room on the page for the paragraph and the graphic that the graphic will automatically go to the next page and observe the top margin?

I find it practically impossible to make floating graphics behave the way I want. Wherever possible, I use inline graphics.

I agree - I thought I was using inline graphics - at least I have the wrapping set to top & bottom. For some reason, the graphic placement relative to the paragraph seems to be beyond my control.

If wrapping is set to top & bottom, it's a floating graphic. Select "In line with text" in the Layout tab of the Format | Picture dialog.

Actually, despite having been frustrated for years with this... I am currently using Word97 and there is no inline option. Top&Bottom is the closest as it is not wrapping at all - just a picture between text.

The option to make a picture inline in Word 97 is in the Position tab of the Format Picture dialog. Clear the "Floating over text" check box to make a picture inline.
An inline picture has no wrapping options and no anchor.
