    MD5 Free Hash Generator

    Hi there,

I'm looking for a completely <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> (i.e., free for commercial use) command line-based MD5 hash generator. The idea is, we get an e-mail from a certain institution, compute an MD5 hash value for every attachment, and send them back as a receipt (the sender is to have checked the hash value before sending us the e-mail).

So far I've downloaded and tried FSUM and MD5sums. Both are free and I haven't found any restriction in their licenses. Eventually I might send mail to clarify the reach of the licence.

These apps seem to work OK, they produce the same hash value for the tested files. In fact one wouldn't expect any discrepancy as long as the algorithm is well implemented.

However I wanted to know your thoughts in this regard, or if you've had an experience with a program you would recommend.

    Thank you very much

    Re: MD5 Free Hash Generator

Don't know about command line utilities, but have you considered HashTab by Beeblebrox.org?
May not suit the purpose, but looks quite good.

    Re: MD5 Free Hash Generator

    Hi Alan,

Thanks for that! It's certainly not what we were looking for, but it's very handy for everyday use.

I've been testing FSUM and MD5sums and they seem stable. They can even generate hashes for large files (I tested on a 4 GB one). So does HashTab.

Our programmer designed a Visual Fox Pro program that processes mail received in Outlook and saves the attachments for later MD5ing. So it would be really cool if we could find a program with an API Visual Fox Pro could call for programming ease. If not, we'll manage with these anyway.

    Thanks

For anyone else ever looking for such a solution: Quickhash might help. Excerpt from the explanatory text on this page:
It supports 3 interfaces: QuickHash API (...) and QuickHash Type Library (includes all declarations for accessing the functionality from programming languages that can reference a .TLB, such as VB 5.0, VB 6.0, VBA, etc).

    Thank you, Hasse!

I am not working there anymore, but there's a chance they will still find this useful. I will let them know.
