Lounge Window closing

Hi All,
Just a quick question.......has anyone else had the phenomenon of the "Lounge browser window" closing as a link is clicked from a post? This happens oh, at least twice a day. *But*, when I return to the Lounge, go to the post in question and click that link again....no problem. The Lounge browser window remains open and the link will open another browser window as it should. So far I've only noticed this with IE and have not noticed it with other sites (but then again I don't "hang out" at other sites as I do here and it may be that I just haven't been other places "long enough" or returned enough times to have this phenom occur).
This really is no big deal and only slightly annoying, but I am curious if this only happens to me or if anyone else has had this happen.
Thanks.

Gary,

Does this happen with a specific kind of link? Links to other posts and to other websites should always open in a new window, but most of the links in the Lounge "menu" (except Help), as well as those in the strip between the menu and the main area (Star Posts etc.) will open in the current window.

(Edited by gdrezek on 15-Feb-06 10:21. )
Hi Hans,
The last post/link to which this happened was <post#=557,073>post 557,073</post#> from Waggers. The link opened in a new browser window, but the Lounge window closed. I've not seen this with any of the links which would open in the current window.
New symptom: which just occurred (and this had *NOT* happened before) 3 minutes ago!!! I wanted to check something out while I was replying the first time so I opened a new instance of IE........and lo and behold, the Lounge/reply window closed as the new instance of IE opened.

Now, I think, this thread could be moved to the IE board. Your call, of course.

edit: OK this happened when I was in the Lounge and opened a new window, but after about a dozen trials, it didn't happen if I was not in the Lounge. I think I need to find more of a pattern.
Thanks.

Re: Lounge Window closing

In your Options for IE, do you have the Option to re-use windows selected?
Are you running any pop-up blockers or add-ins for IE?

Reuse windows for launching links is checked.
I use the Google task bar w/popup blocker. I see that Yahoo has it's task bar there as well. It's not visible so I kinda forget about it, but I know as well that doesn't stop it from trying to be useful. I think I'll disable them soon.
edit: I've also got no idea where PCPitStop came from....I just rebuilt this machine around 3 weeks ago and don't remember ever loading that.

(Edited by gdrezek on 15-Feb-06 11:48. )
Hi Leif and Hans,
I'm going to make this a moot point. As I stated in my last post I just nuked and rebuilt this machine approx. 3 weeks ago and have really not been satisfied with the "load". I've been looking for a reasonable excuse to rebuild it again and I guess this is it.

[added] It has gotten much worse in the last couple of hours. Almost every other time I hit a link or open a new IE browser window the original IE window gets closed. It's gone from slightly annoying to highly irritating.[/added]

It's just about lunchtime and unless y'all want to track this down and need this to perhaps find the cause, I'm going to re-nuke it and start the rebuild, when I get back from lunch.
Thank you both for your assistance.

Re: Lounge Window closing

Gary,

I've had this or a similar problem for some time now. It is very erratic and unpredictable as to when it would happen, I would click on a post somewhere in the Lounge and "bang", I would be back to my main desktop screen and the Lounge would be closed.

I even posted this problem when this was happening but there was never any answer as to what was causing it. It will still rear it's ugly head once in a while. The last only a few days ago. I guess I have gotten so used to this that I don't even bother to try for a solution.

Now that someone else is experiencing it, I should pay more attention to the details when it does.

Re: Lounge Window closing

Hi Bob,
As I stated I'm gonna nuke the machine and rebuild it, not just because of this inopportune closing phenom, but because I haven't felt comfortable about the stability of this last rebuild I did. However, because of this problem, I am going to take great pains and time in rebuilding to see just what may be the cause. It may take me a week or two to finish the rebuild just to see if this re-occurs. I'm not happy you're experiencing the same thing, but I no longer feel alone.

Re: Lounge Window closing

Bob,
Do you by chance have the Yahoo toolbar? I've just noticed something......the Yahoo toolbar should remain closed in IE on this machine, but I guess lately it hasn't. After clicking it off, after a couple of new browser windows it will reappear.
If a new browser window opens and the Yahoo toolbar remains closed, the parent window remains open. BUT, if the Yahoo toolbar opens when the new browser window opens, then the parent window will close. This has repeated itself the last 20 consecutive times I've done this. I've no clue as to why the Yahoo toolbar won't remain closed after I've checked it off after right clicking in IE's toolbar region. I'm also clueless as to why I haven't noticed it before this as normally I'm fairly proficient at recognizing patterns. I've got another machine here at work which has the Yahoo toolbar loaded, but it remains off after clicking it off.
I know something that WILL NOT get re-loaded during my rebuild of this machine.

Re: Lounge Window closing

Hi Claude,
On the machine in question.....no.
It's a university laptop whose updates are controled via GPO and the persons in charge of that have not yet pushed them out. I do take this machine home nightly but I've been told that should not disturb their process in regards to updates and virus definition updates.
Should I "jump over" them and do it manually?

I wouldn't do it personally because you never know what else they control. Can't you just uninstall the yahoo toolbar ?
Cheers, Claude.

Re: Lounge Window closing

Hi Claude,
I've got a bit (well actually more than a bit) more leeway in doing updates, etc. than do 99% of the rest of the campus. Depending on the updates, they won't even push certain ones out until I can say they are compatible with certain programs. (I use the Woody newsletters first and foremost along with 2-3 other secondary sources before I try anything myself to see if any of the updates will be a concern with our setup)
So I'm thinking that I should do the update (again I still plan on re-building the machine in question) and see if that will fix this. If I know this campus, then someone else will have had this happen and, in doing so, I can either recommend a course of action, or at least say what didn't work.
I'll keep you posted.....it shouldn't take too long I'd expect.

Re: Lounge Window closing

Hi Claude,
Just a quick note......I did Windows Update, but to no avail. I've gone over this whole mess with the powers that be (and did clear it with them that I do the updates) and they agreed that I take the rebuild step by step, days if necessary, and see if it was just what I loaded or how I loaded and if it returns, then see what can be done. It is pretty much a foregone conclusion that, if in fact it crops up again, then there will be others on campus who will experience this.
Also this problem occurs no matter which page I start with. As long as the Yahoo toolbar remains "closed" links are not a problem, but if it "opens" along with a new browser window, the parent window will close.
Thank you all for your help.

--------------------------------------------------------
No, I don't. I use the Google Toolbar.

The Yahoo one is for Yahoos!

Why not get rid of the Yahoo Toolbar?
