Section breaks in subdocuments (Word 2002 SP3)

I'm having problems with section breaks in subdocuments.

My master document includes several subdocs, some of these are only a few paragraphs long. When I insert a subdoc into the master doc, Word always inserts a section break to separate the subdoc. Fine.

But Word often creates a Section break (next page). I would like to have a Section break (continuous). I have even defined that my subdoc starts at Continuous (in File/Page Setup/Layout tab). Word doesn't seem to care.

I have tried to manually insert a Section break (continuous) and then delete the Section break (next page), but Word ignores this and reinstates the Section break (next page).

Is this a bug? Are there any workarounds?

    Thanks very much,

    Ben

The workaround would be to use the includetext field to bring the external documents into the file. This has the advantage of being far more stable than master documents too.

Thanks for the suggestion, Andrew. But the formatting problems are even worse with section breaks than when using a master/subdocument design.

Word seems to randomly assign a style to the first line of an includetext field.

    Any suggestions most appreciated!

Hmmm, that hasn't been my experience with includetext fields (but I don't use them much). Have you tried exploring the different switches available for the field? Does the source and target text have any local formatting applied or are you relying purely on paragraph styles for the format?
