Multi page problem (wxp mso2003)

I have a very strange problem that has after several years, just become apparent.

A user generated a letter from a template. The letter ran to 3 pages. She then wanted to edit the text on the third page and found that she "lost" the curser. On investigation I found that when scrolling through the document as soon as I entered page 3 the little book in the status bar activated showing that a spell check was being carried out. This continued for several minutes until I scrolled back up through the document to about half way up page 2.

I managed to recreate the problem/behaviour by creating a new letter from the template and generating 3 pages (see attached).

I have developed a work around by copying the text out editing it and copying back.

Can anyone help with this?

The page header contains an IF field that apparently makes Word very nervous. It displays a header text if the page number is greater than or equal to 1. This IF field is superfuous: in the first place, the page number is always greater than or equal to one, and in the second place, First page different has been ticked in the Layout tab of File | Page Setup...
Taking the header text out of the IF field and deleting the IF field seems to remove most of the nervousness.

Has this document been converted from a WordPerfect document? I notice that it contains some ADVANCE fields. If so, there may be hidden corruption in the document. Saving as .rtf, then saving as .doc again may help solving that.

I did both in the attached document. It appears to have fewer problems than the original.

The IF field is there so that if the letter is more than one page the date and organisation name are copied into the header using the REF field. I have removed the = bit as you are right this is redundant because there will not be a header if there is only 1 page. Duh!

No this was never a WordPerfect document. I know all about those problems! I cannot save as an .rtf as there are macros attached and these will be disabled.

If you can suggest a better way of getting the required information into the header on all pages >1 this would be much appreciated.

- You can convert to RTF and back, then import the macros from the original document.

- I don't understand the header problem. I thought this was already taken care of by the "First page different" setting? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Tried converting and transferring the macros but still misbehaving!

With the header all I want to do is put the organisation name, the date and "Page x of y" in the header on all subsequent pages

How does the document I attached behave for you? If it's OK, its original as posted by you apparently wasn't representative.

I didn't even see the document. But that is what I have done, removed the If statement and just use the Ref fields. Works fine.
