Did you notice that they REMOVED Outlook from the Teachers and Students edition?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I hadn't noticed, but strange - it's the only Office edition without Outlook. You'd think teachers and students use e-mail a lot.

BUT LOOK!!! Instead of Outlook, the fabulously successful and in demand ONE NOTE is included!

While it indeed may be a marketing ploy, I think you have to consider the release time frame. It is the same as Vista which is supposed to have a new mail client called Windows Mail. I think MS wants people who are unwilling or unable to purchase a version of Office with Outlook to use Windows Mail. Remember too, that Office Standard is not the least expensive version which has Outlook. Office Basic has Outlook too.

Well Joe, according to the releases, Standard IS the least expensive version which includes Outlook. Office Basic (according to the releases) has no price quoted and is not available as a retail version (available only through OEMs). MS has apparently decided that One Note is a definite requirement for "Students and Teachers", but Outlook is superfluous (unless of course they want to pay extra) , OR upgrade to Vista, OR both ( )

Actually when I first saw it I didn't react at all, maybe because I have not reflected over it, i.e. Outlook is included in "Student and Teacher Edition 2003" now. The versions (Editions!) I have stumbled on are Professional/Standard/SBE.

Five-ten years ago anyone at the university used other e-mail clients, Outlook was for corporations. Now days I don't know what students use, web mail this, chat this ... and everyone seems to have a laptop so OneNote maybe isn't that wrong? But a good e-mail client is also nice.

However, what caught my eye (regarding this Ed.) is the name change: "Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007". "Home", have they changed the Qualifying Criteria "Educational User"?

Ah, well, the authors of Office books will have some writing to do, with all the changes taking place in document formats, UI etc.

I had seen the announcement also and had a few questions:

    - I have Access installed as part of 2003. If I install the Student and Teacher version, which doesn't have Access, what happens to my Access install? Would past experience at least suggest that it survives the 2007 install?

    - as far as the email goes, I don't use Outlook, even tho I have 2003. I use Outlook Express, which, if I recall, comes with Windows. So what's happening with that? Mention was made about the Windows mai. Supposing I do NOT upgrade to VISTA, I'd assume my Outlook Express is intact. But what if I do upgrade to VISTA - which client would I be using?

(Sorry Hans, I needed someone to reply to. This is just an open-ended question for anyone to answer.)

    1) There should be no problem using Office 2007 (without Access) and Access 2003.

    2) Windows Mail *is* the Windows Vista version of Outlook Express - Microsoft decided to rename OE. So you'd be using Windows Mail.

Standard is the least expensive RETAIL version of Office 2007 with Outlook. However, Impretty sure that the vast majority of consumer purchases of Office are with a new PC and not an upgrade. If so, then Vista will be the OS on the vast majority of PCs sold with Office 2007 and consumers will have the option of Basic or Home&Student. See Microsoft Monitor: Assessing Office 2007 Versions and Pricing for some additional thoughts. BTW, all this does not mean I'm not upset about the packaging. While I like One Note if I had to choose right now I'd much rather have Outlook included in the H&S version. Once more details are available publicly about the Vista mail client I may change my mind.

"Windows Mail" I wonder if it's MAPI ? I would sure like a small mapi cient so I wouldn't have to put Outlook on servers andmanagement computers, just to getaccess to mapi profiles.

Not sure if there is really anything worthwhile yet but check Windows Vista Home Page.

I have the Beta from TechNet, but I haven't looked at it yet.
