Field Shading (2003 SP2)

I cannot get rid field shading - No matter what I do. There was a topic similar to this almost three years ago ( <post#=146197>post 146197</post#>) but it stopped. Here's my problem:

When I insert a field in a document, it's always shaded grey when both viewing and printing. Even when I change the Tools>Options>View | Field Shading to Never. Reveal Formatting does not show that the text is shaded. Border and Shading finds no shading.

Anyone have ANY idea where this shading is coming from?

Does this hold for any kind of field?

Form fields (the kind you create from the Forms toolbar) are ALWAYS shaded on screen and in print preview (but not in print), regardless of the Field Shading setting in Tools | Options...

Other fields should follow the Field Shading setting.

Hans, thanks for your quick response.

The problem appears to be in the merge document (Word).

I created a new, blank merge doc. Then I (1) eliminated the merge fields, (2) copied the entire contents of the existing doc into the new merge doc and (3) selected the same data source. When I inserted any field into the new merge doc, lo and behold, there was no shading ... none.

What's going on with Word here? Is this a "bug" or a "feature"? Grrrrr ... <img src=/S/sarcasm.gif border=0 alt=sarcasm width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/smash.gif border=0 alt=smash width=30 height=26>

Since the shading occurs in the original document, but not if you copy the merge fields into a new document, I'd say that the original document has become corrupt.
