We've all been saying it was only a matter of time, and here it is: 'First' Mac OS X Trojan sighted | The Register

Re: Mac OSX virus

Hi Waggers, thanks for the heads up. I've done some checking and it appears that this one (and two others that have surfaced this week) appear to be low risk. 1 on the scale of 5. In order for this worm to work the user actually has to do some pretty stupid things (and these are Mac users we are talking about)!

This isn't actually the first OSX "threat" there have been at least two others that I am aware of, which Apple quickly patched. I expect we will see the same here.

However as the Mac becomes more popular, and I've seen suggestions that with the new Intel processors they might break the 5% level this year or next, we will have to expect more of these. We might even have to install anti-virus software on our Macs!

This might be a bit sad, but to hear such an admission from a Mac user is actually quite an exciting breakthrough!

Don't forget I'm bilingual! I suffer from malware on both platforms, by varying degrees. Practice safe-computing!

Re: Mac OSX virus

I don't know if this is the same threat or another one but it was published 2/21/06 and mentions previous Trojans and worms, so maybe it's another one for Bowlie to check out. ( or the other two MAC users on the Lounge )

Re: Mac OSX virus

Hi Bob,
This is the third one that I mentioned above - The good news is there is an easy work around (besides not downloading Zip files, which are quite rare for the Mac anyway) - just use Firefox rather than Safari. I'm sure it won't be too long before Apple plugs this one. I use Firefox on my PC, but haven't on my Mac - if I need to download something, I might give it a try ...

I'm sure there are more than 3 mac user's in the lounge, it must be that very few of them have any reason to visit the Anti-virus forum

Bowlie!

I am going to come out in the open and let you know that I finally sunk money in the newest iMac! Couldn't resist especially since I have a son-in-law that is strictly a Mac man and promised to be my "help desk". I also have my PC to do lots of work and to keep me in the mix but I think now I will have the best of both worlds! I did download Firefox (easy) as one of the first things to do and I am glad now that I did.

Bowlie,
I just wanted to give you a heads up on that article. Seemed like a lot of threats all at once. Better safe than sorry.

Absolutely - and sorry that I didn't say thank you, I did appreciate your comment. I did elaborate on my answer, because I wanted any of the other three Mac users in the lounge to get the word. again.

Re: Mac OSX virus

Wow, Skitter - I'm impressed. Before this thread gets too off-topic, let me say !!! If your son-in-law ever goes on vacation - just let me know, I'll be more than happy to help out, in the unlikely event you need it. I'm sure that other loungers will be interested in hearing your experiences. Keep us informed

Re: Mac OSX virus

Bowlie,
But you do are bilingual, good to here. Don't know so much about Mac's but they do look good.

Anyhow, to stay on topic there is some reading about these Mac viruses/worms at F-secure. I should have posted earlier, then I saw Waggers post. Maybe you have looked at F-secure.
Thursday, February 16, 2006 Leap.A - The first virus for Mac OS X
Friday, February 17, 2006 Second Max OS X malware discovered
Tuesday, February 21, 2006 More OS X malware

As always, PC or Mac, it can be that some early forms of a specific virus only works under certain conditions, and thus is not a real threat, "in the wild", at that moment. Best of course is to follow patch development and different anti-virus news sources.

Re: Mac OSX virus

Bowlie! Thanks for the offers of help because I may indeed be posting for advise on how to do things and you may be sorry that you offered!

Now about this virus problem - I take it that this virus can't be gotten unless a file is opened? And since it is an executable, I'd have to give my administrative password before it can "do it's thing" anyway? At least anything else that I have loaded on here asks for my permission. Maybe this wouldn't though? I am using iChat with my daughter but she is the only person that I have "chatted with" on my iMac so hopefully, she wouldn't pass a sickness on to me! But I'll be careful!

........will be interested in hearing your experiences. Keep us informed.

Once I get more comfortable, one of my first adventures will be digital movie making! Something I have struggled with in the PC world but I am hopeful it will go very well in the MAC world! So I will be happy to relay my experiences!

Bob - So you came out? So sorry to hear that! ----I'm not! I have lots of fun so far and I think it is going to be a hoot!
Dave - What else are you hidding from us? ---- I'll take the 5th and not answer!
Argus - Don't know so much about Mac's but they do look good. --- This one sure is!! Now all I got to do is learn how to use it to its full potential!
