    Caption numbering (WORD '03 SP2)

I have a lengthy tech document that starts with heading 1 being numbered section 7.
When I look at the first caption, it is numbered correctly, heading 7-1.
I need for all the captions to be uniform, starting with numbering of Heading 7-1, 7-2, 7-3, 7-4 to the end of the last figure.
Caption numbering is messed up, since someone came along and updated some of the figures. I don't know how to fix this.
One of the error messages that came up is:
Go to format menu/Bullet & Numbering/select multilevel list styles that is linked to the heading styles.
I've gone to this and it is not working...

Perhaps it'd be best to make a copy of the document, remove all captions and create them anew.
Once you have removed the existing captions:
    - Click on the first figure.
    - Select Insert | Reference | Caption...
    - Set up the options the way you want them (including the chapter number), then click OK.
    - Click on the next figure and select Edit | Repeat Caption or press Ctrl+Y.
    - Repeat for the other figures.

Do you have any idea why I'm able to update a TOC, but, it will not save in a WORD document?

What happens if you try to save the document? Do you get an error message?

Re: Caption numbering (WORD '03 SP2)

Can't do this. When I select all and copy/paste all the headings get renumbered and this turns into a nightmare.
I have a 459 page WORD document. Up to the middle of the document, all the caption numbering is FINE. When, captioning forgets that it last assigned #86 and starts over numbering with #1.
Is there another way around this to continue the figure numbering where it left off? Is it effected by the type of graphic in the figure as to remembering what number it is suppose to be assigning?

    Who said something about copying and pasting headings? <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

    Try the following:
    - Right-click the problem caption (the one incorrectly numbered 1)
    - Select Toggle Field Codes from the popup menu.
    - You'll see something like { SEQ Figure ... }
    - There will be some field switches where I put ...
    - If there is a switch r 1, delete it.
    - Press F9 to hide the field codes and to update the field.

When I R click on the 'bad' caption numbered caption, I DON't have the option to select TOGGLE FIELD codes from pop-up menu....

Then perhaps it isn't a field. Try deleting this caption, and creating it anew.
