    All Spreadsheet in Folder Open when Excel is Open (Office XP)

    We are in the process of moving all of our users from a Novell environment to Microsoft Active Directory. One user is having a unique problem, it has happened to no one else. After she was moved to AD each time she opens Excel, all the spreadsheets in her default folder open--it's over 100! We have tried removing and reloading software. The open all files in folder option is not checked, none of them are located in the XLstartup, and when you right-click on the the application from the taskbar, the close group option is grayed out and unavailable. However they need to be closed individually to a point and then suddenly the remaining files close at once.

    Again, the anomaly happened immediately after a conversion to AD. Any suggestions and help would be appreciated. The probem seems to be located somewhere outside of Office since a reload of software did not correct the problem. Could there be a registry problem?

    On her machine, start Excel and go to Tools/Options and click on the General Tab (that is in XL2K, might be different on XP) and check the box labeled "Alternate startup directory." See if that box points to the directory where all of the files are opening. If so, remove it from that box.

    There is no Alternate startup Directory in XP and I neglected to mention in the prior post that when we tried to change the default directory to something different on the startup tab, it wouldn't accept the change. It would always revert back to the original default directory from which the error occurs. Thanks for help on this big problem & issue!

    The Alternate Startup folder in Excel 2002 (XP) is labeled as "At startup, open all files in" in the General tab of Tools | Options...

    Yes, we see that folder, but we don't have anything in it. Why would we want to place anything in it because all the files are opening up anyway in the default folder.

    Check the following registry key in Regedit:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice10.0Common General

    The Xlstart value holds the XLSTART folder. Does this point to the same as the default folder? BTW, the default folder is in the DefaultPath value in

    Thanks Hans, finally got a chance to check out your last option, changing the Registry, today. We did it and it did not solve the problem, any more ideas? Remember it started immediately after having changed the user to Active Directory. Nothing has helped so far. the user is in Hawaii this week, but when she comes back she'll want it fixed and we are just at a loss! Thanks, Judy
