Animated Icons (WinXP-SP-2)

Is there any way to create an animated icon from an animated GIF file?

    Regards,

    Doc:

Thanks. Ive posted to their BB to see which of their products I would use to change an animated GIF to an animated ICO.

    Doc:

    Thought you might be curious:

Hi, Chuck. Microangelo doesn't edit or convert animated GIF files. The animations it works with are ANI formatted files, specifically 32x32 or 48x48 pixels in size.

My bad. I didn't read it closely enough. I don't know if this will work for you, but it's . Try AniTuner. It will create the .ani files from the .gif files. I don't know if you can save them as .ico files or not with AniTuner, but I'd guess that Microangelo could do that for you since it works with .ani files.

Not sure of this, but I believe you can create an animated cursor (.CUR) file, then simply rename its extension to .ICO to have it display as an animated icon. ???

Sounds logical Alan. I don't have any animated cursors to try it with.

    Re: Animated Icons (WinXP-SP-2)

I've got a host of animated .cur themes and they are all created with ".png" files. The animation is accomplished similar to an animated ".gif" file, i.e., a series of single frames. So, at first glance, it wouldn't appear that simply renaming them with an "ico" extension would work. But I thought it would be worth a try and the result was what I expected. See the screenshot below which shows what the ".ico" file looks like when viewed:

    Re: Animated Icons (WinXP-SP-2)

I was fooling around with this last night before I went out and downloaded a .cur theme file from CursorXP to play with. I discovered the same thing. The .cur theme files are composed of .png images. But .ani files seem to be unique to themselves. If I open a .cur theme file in Winzip (these theme files are .zip or .exe files) it shows a collection of .png files with an .ini file included.. Microangelo Animator will not open this file, but it will open an .ani file as a series of images. Animator will only save files as .ani and renaming the .ani file to .ico produces a single static image. I'm out of thoughts here.

Might be worth fiddling with the program ActivIcons, which claims that

You can even use ActivIcons to display animated icons on your desktop, or make the icon text labels transparent.
