Reinstall Win XP (Win XP SP2)

I THINK I would like to reinstall Win XP on my computer with the hopes of better performance than my "gunked up" version that is currently running (although with no major headaches) for a few years now. I have never done this before so please 1) talk me out of it or 2) talk me into it and tell me where I may find comprehensive yet reasonably easy instructions to follow. Thanks in advance for any help !!!!!

Are there any particular issues or reasons that are causing you to THINK this way ??? Is the system slow or presenting you with a large number of error messages ?? Does it not perform certain tasks or fail to do any common, everyday tasks ?? If so, perhaps we can help to isolate and troubleshoot the problem. If not, we can certainly help you with a format and reinstall of your OS. What seems to be the problem(s) ???

Re: Reinstall Win XP (Win XP SP2)

There is no exceptional problem. I get some strange error messages once in a while and have reported these in the Lounge but have been told mostly to look for virus/spyware/ adware problems. I run Pc-cillan, Ad-ware, Spybot S&D, Trojan Hunter, & never find any problem in this vain. So I figured that maybe a reinstall (although I am not looking forward to it) would some of these sporadic issues OR is not worth the potential problems or reconfigurations that I will have to go through just to solve these minor annoyances ?

How long has it been since you've done any system maintenance ???

If you don't do any, then try running the DiskCleanup utility Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>DiskCleanup and then defragging your hard drive(s) and/or partitions Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter. I find these two simple proceedures help system proformance and keep things running smoothly. I'd give them a try before doing a reinstall for such minor issues. Just my of course.

Re: Reinstall Win XP (Win XP SP2)

I guess I'm in Doc's camp on this one. The periodic and non-major problems we tend to encounter can usually be improved with some maintenance chores as Doc has suggested. It's my considered opinion that the so-called re-install "usually" won't make enough differences in performance to make it worth your trouble. Only a "clean install" will completely sterilize a machine and THAT IS usually a major undertaking. There can be SO MANY factors that impact our perceived performance, that it's hard to get a handle on 'em all. For example, I have recently been having a slower performing computer, in spite of doing defrags, virus scans, malware scans, and so on. It turns out that I replaced two of my hard drives, which by the way still reported NO problems. I replaced 40 gig drives with current 80 gig, 7,200 rpm drives and suddenly my system seems to be perking right along. Computers are mysterious beasts and it's awful hard to decide what to do to keep 'em humming at peak performance level.

Re: Reinstall Win XP (Win XP SP2)

I agree with Doc and Al; if one has minor problems, slightly slower etc. and do not find any viruses, adware etc. during normal scanning routines, a start is to do simple cleaning and defragmentation. Of course from one week to another there is normally no need to run disk defragmenter, but if it hasn't been done for a year or two it can be a real change.

Then of course one must stay updated with patches. Not only security related for the OS. It can be some CD burning program that has problem, and have a patch released.

Errors can certainly also be related to hardware such as bad memory, and in that case obviously no repair or clean install will help.

A clean install is not complicated to perform; the work is before and after. First is to make sure every data is secured on back up medium, and that you have a copy of every program you would like to install, drivers etc. The work after is to install every program, adding updates and patches, your data and settings.

Ok everyone, I guess you are probably correct. About once a month, I do an extensive check for viruses, spyware, and adware plus data and registry cleanups to the best of my ability so I guess it is probably easier to live with the small stuff. Thanks for the advice.
