Filename appended with 1 (Excel 2000)

When I file a spread sheet after making changes, Excel is trying to save it as FILENAME1.xls and trying to put it into a different directory - not back to the original.
I know that there is some use for this (duplicate copy?) feature but I don't need it. Excel just started doing this recently.
I would appreciate any suggestion to help fix this silly error. Thanks in advance ....

You sure this is not a template you are using or a workbook created with SaveAs (or a fle copy) from a template instead of File|New ?

Thanks for the idea ... the files are not templetes, but as you suggested they could have been copied from a templete earlier. I re-saved all those effected files (save as) excel workbooks and they seem to be O.K. now. Thanks again! ....
