Computer is freezing

I am working on a computer that a lady has donated to a charitable organization. It is a "no-name" that had Windows ME on it. She was having problems with it - which I attributed to Windows ME. So when I re-did the computer, I installed Windows 98 SE rather than ME. Lo and behold, the system froze shortly after starting up. I thought it might be the RAM memory so I replaced that. No luck - still is freezing. So I replaced the video card. No luck - still is freezing. So I replaced the hard drive - no luck - it is still freezing. The sound card is integrated in the mother board. I do notice some background "buzz" when I move the cursor around - like static in the speakers. The processor is an 800 MHz AMDDuron. The motherboard is a BCM GT133KT. Chip is a VIA VT8363 Appollo KT 133.

Only things left to replace is the motherboard and powersupply. Could it be the powersupply. There are no indications that it is a problem.

I've just gotta ask - How cold is it where you and that computer are located? I've been freezing lately too Bring on the warm summertime!

Re: Computer is freezing

Explain what you mean by freezing. Does Windows boot and then freeze or does it freeze up DURING the boot process? Since you've replaced the drive, I assume you have re-installed Win98. Have you tried booting to Safe Mode to see what happens? I guess it could be a power supply and that doesn't usually manifest itself with any errors, so you may just have to try a replacement. It would also be interesting to see if you can boot the machine with a Win98 boot FLOPPY to see if you can mess around in DOS for awhile without any freezes.

The system boots up OK. It simply freezes after a period of time - which varies. I just had it on for over 30 minutes and no freeze.Sometimes it freezes after only a few minutes. By freezing I mean "locking up". The mouse does not work. Pressing CTRL- ALT - DEL has no effect. There are no error messages.

Yes Skitterbug - we did get snow in Arkansas and it has been cold here in North Central Arkansas. But the computer is in a warm toasty room so that is not the problem. LOL.

Hi Rebel!

We just returned from sunny Florida and played golf for 6 wonderful days!! It would have been 8 days but we received torrential rains for our first two days there!! But it was lots of fun!!

Trebor - Glad to hear that you and that computer are somewhere warm in spite of the weather! At least you can rule out ice crystals and sticking hard drive platters!! I don't have any other suggestions at the moment other than replacing each item - which removes it from the equation - until the computer works. And that's the plan you are doing now. Good luck! Stubborn computer problems are "bears to deal with"! (A favorite family saying!)

Re: Computer is freezing

I'm sorry!! I shouldn't have told you that! You probably can't even find the golf course under all of that snow, can you? It hasn't been very nice here in Ohio either but we have it lots better than where you are! Our season will probably get under way about mid April and for sure by the 1st of May! Come on down!!

Skitterbug,
Come to sunny, kinda warm ( 40ish ) Cape Cod. Only one snowstorm of any amount so far ( knock wood ) and the golf courses have been in good use most every day! Nor even necessary to use the orange colored golf balls either.

Re: Computer is freezing

Let's get back to Trebor's question, shall we? Trebor, during all that hardware replacing you did, you did a clean install of Win98 didn't you? This problem sounds like a driver problem of some kind and I'm not sure where to start. Since you've already mentioned the buzzing, why don't we experiment with no sound for awhile by disabling the motherboard sound to see if that stops the freeze ups?

Re: Computer is freezing

Hi Big Al, Yes, I did a clean install of WIN 98 SE. I have disabled the Sound and will give the system time to see what happens. However, I observed another strange item - when I turn the computer off, the Num Lock light on the keyboard stays on. It even stayed on when I pulled the electric plug from the tower. NOTE: interesting, I decided to check if disabling the sound would have any effect on the NUM LOCK light - and sure enough, the light went out when I shut down the computer. I will let you know if disabling the sound has any effect.

Re: Computer is freezing

Sounds like maybe you're on the right track, for I've never seen a case where a KB light stays on without power. Jeez, I hope it isn't the motherboard. If it is the sound, that's a pretty easy and inexpensive replacement. I just can't figure what would be allowing power through to the keyboard. BTW, I have seen flaky sound on a number of machines I built a few years ago when I was still employed. Someone at work bought a few mobos with onboard sound and their track record (my opinion) wasn't so hot. Keep us posted.

Hi Big Al, It has been 4 hours now and the system has not froze. Seems like the integrated sound may be the culprit. I am going to let it run the rest of the evening and then tomorrow will install a pci sound card. Will let you know what happens. thanks for the help.

Bob,
What's the chance that on this thread, on this forum on this new site (for me) I would find another Cape Codder?
I would say mighty slim. Yet, it happened.
Glad to see I have a local expert.

Paul
