    Protection Error Notice

Have a 6 year old Compaq with Win 98SE; all the latest windows updates; adaware; spybot; micrsoft antispyware; AVG antivirus-Free Edition; and spyware blaster. Use them about 2 or 3 times a week. About 21/2 years ago, I had a warranty repair go sour which required the repair folks to replace 80% of the parts, including the motherboard ( which they fried when trying to make the initial repair).

This ancient mariner is used primarily by my wife for email and messenger activity although I occasionally use it for web searches and word documents.

Since late last week, we've been getting the following message when trying to start the unit:
"While initializing the device CONFIGMG: windows protection error. You need to restart your computer."

I do that and sometimes I get a black screen with a blinking cursor or get the option screen for normal start up and various safe mode start ups. When I choose 'Safe Mode' I get some activity, but not the safe mode desktop. After 3 or 4 tries, sometimes using 'F8', I reach the safe mode desktop, hit run and go to 'msconfig'. The I diddle-daddle with some of the start up choices...not knowing what I'm doing...and then shut down and restart.

After 1 or 2 tries, I finally reach the normal desktop screen and everything works fine from then on.

When I try to start the unit the next day, I go thru the same trials and tribulations.

    Any suggestions?

    Ralph M.

    Re: Protection Error Notice

Oh boy, it's been a long time since I've dealt with this one. It seems to me that Windows protection errors usually have to do with device drivers of one kind or another. Here's a couple of starters at the Microsoft site. See if there's any clues in these. You can use (as I did) the Google search trick of "windows protection error site:microsoft.com" to get a more extensive list of reading.

Take a look at this MSKB article. It's specific to the CONFIGMG error message. If that doesn't help, then have a look through this Google Search. HTH <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Protection Error Notice

Thanx for the leads Gents. I found the CONFIGMG protection error write-up and will try it soon.

In the resolution section of the write-up, it says to contact the computer manufacturer about the possibility of a bios upgrade. Two questions. Now that HP owns Compaq, will I be able to make such contact and get what is needed, for a 6 year old CPU? Do they usually charge for such things?

As usual, I greatly appreciate your expert advice.

    Re: Protection Error Notice

You can still get firmware (BIOS) and other updates from HP for Compaq machines. Even so, it's doubtful that there has been a BIOS update for a machine of this vintage, at least within the last 4-5 years. BIOS updates are typical during the earlier life cycle of a developed product and tend to taper off as time passes.

I've never had to pay for support unless I was opting for "priority" service, in which case the fee usually means that your phone calls are routed to the top of the chain and any service calls get taken care of faster. There shouldn't be any charge for downloads and any documentation that you find; if there is then my eyebrows would raise slowly. Search the HP website for your make and model number and you will probably find anything relevant to the machine.

    Hope that helps...
