    How to open Word in a read only manner? (Access 2002)

    I have an Access Database which creates Contracts in Word using bookmarks. Everything works great except I would like the Word document to open in a read only manner so that the user has to do a Save As so that they don' t overwrite the original Word document with the bookmarks in it.

    Can anyone assist me in how to do this?

    Thanks!

    One option is to save the DOC file as a template (DOT), or simply treat the .DOC file as though it were actually a template. Then create the new document using either:

    myDoc = appWord.Documents.Add(Template:=formname.dot)
    myDoc = appWord.Documents.Add(Template:=formname.doc)

    as applicable. The user will get a new "Document1" (etc.) rather than your original document. (appWord is however you are referring to the Word application.)
