Firefox gets stuck in Ctrl+F search (Firefox 1.5.0

More puzzling behavior: Sometimes (and I cannot predict or re-create the behavior) I can't type into a text box on a webpage, but instead all the typing gets put into a Ctrl+F search box --- which opened by itself. One time it happened, I had to close the browser to fix it, but this last time I was able to close the tab and reopen it. Anybody had that happen? Is this something that needs a re-install or something? This particular time it wasn't a problem, but sometimes I don't want to have to close the browser and lose track of what I was doing. (My SessionSaver isn't working the way it used to either, since I got TabMixPlus...)

I've not had the problem you've described here (at least not to my knowledge), but if the "/"key is pressed while a text-entry box isn't selected, the find prompt will appear.

    Maybe, you're pressing the / key, rather than the shift <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

Hmm, who knows? It's certainly possible. I haven't been able to see when/where it does that, but I do remember the last time I was typing something, I wasn't using capitals at all.

I do see that after using the "/" to bring up the search the "Esc" closes it. So I'll try the Esc next time to see if I can get out of the loop without closing Firefox down.

Maybe the 'Find As You Type' option? See the section "Use Find As You Type" near the bottom on this Firefox Options page, which links to these tweaks.

(Incidentally, I find if you invoke the search entry field with the '/' key, simply clicking anywhere on the page kills it. It also does not work if you are already typing within an entry field.)

Hmm, no, that doesn't seem to be what's happening. But it's an interesting feature. There were a lot of other interesting tweaks on that 2nd page too, thanks. I see that some of them seem to be covered by some of the extensions I'm using (like the color of the active tab changes with TabMixPlus.

Re: Firefox gets stuck in Ctrl+F search (Firefox 1

This is an intermittent bug that has proved very difficult to track down. A few other people have reported seeing this in Fx 1.5/1.5.0.1 and indications are that it is caused by problems with extensions (IE Tab being mentioned a few times).

When this behaviour appears rather than closing Firefox, you can minimize and then restore the Firefox window to stop it happening.

As for Session Saver, Tab Mix Plus has Session Saver features built in. This will cause conflict with the Session Saver extension and it is recommended not to have both extensions installed.

Wow, that's great news --- that it's happening to others. And yes, it's "intermittent and difficult to track down". Glad to hear that minimizing the window will make it quit.

I did notice that I needed to get rid of Session Saver before I put TabMixPlus in. I can't imagine what plain vanilla FF would look like, since I have a lot of extensions I can't live without.

    Thanks again,
