    Page numbering (xp/2003)

    Hi,
    I have a page numbering placed in a header.
    I do not want to show this page number (and the header) on the first 2 pages.
    The numbering should start on the third page with "3"

    TIA
    Wolf

    You could have a section break at the end of page 2. That enables you to have different page numbering for the different sections. So Section 1 would have a header with no page number, while section 2 would have one.

    Re: Page numbering (xp/2003)

    Ian,
    thank you for your answer.
    I added a section break (page) at the end of page 2.
    When inserting a page number in the header of page 3 (it says header section 2), this page number also appears on page 2.
    When I delete it on page 2, it is also deleted on page 3 and the following.
    Is there anything else I need to do?

    Yes. You may find that by default the header in section 2 is set to be 'same as previous'. In the header and footer dialog, get to section 2 and then use the button indicated in the screenshot below to break the link between the headers in the two sections. You can then have them different.

    An alternative approach would be to use an IF field, to insert something like...

    { If { Page }>"2" { Page } "" }

    This would only display the page number on pages after page 2, but would avoid having to include section breaks.

    Re: Page numbering (xp/2003)

    Hi Stuart

    I tried before

    { IF { PAGE } > 2 "{ PAGE }" "" }

    which I found in http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Number...eNumbering.htm

    but this and also your formula did not give the expected result.

    <edited>
    Just found out the reason why.
    My pagenumber formatting was set to "- 1 -". That's why the comparison with "1" did not give a result.
    Setting the formatting back solved the problem.

    Your problem is that the 2 should have been in "" marks. Have a look at this example.

    Edited - I see from your edit that you had more than one problem!!

    Re: Page numbering (xp/2003)

    Hi Stuart,

    there seems to be a lot of "flexibility" in this formula.
    Using your "virgin" example for me all these formulas work:

    { if {page} > 2 {page} ""}
    { if {page} > 2 "{page}" ""}
    { if {page} > "2" {page} ""}
    { if {page} > "2" "{page}" ""}

    When selecting in Insert - Page Number - Format anything else than the format "1,2,3" (as I did in my file) , for me none of the formulas works.

    Best regards

    Re: Page numbering (xp/2003)

    I tried modifying your suggestion by adding of {Numpages} pages just to see what would happen. Obviously this will print on the first two pages "of 3 pages" without a page number. Is there a method to have it start printing at page 3, "Page 3 of 3 Pages", but leave the first two pages with nothing in the header?

    thanks.

    You can use this - remember, never type the field brackets { } directly, always use Ctrl+F9 to insert them (or Insert | Field...):

    <code>{ IF { PAGE } > 2 "Page { PAGE } of { NUMPAGES }" "" }</code>
