Word - unusual symbol find & replace (Word 2002 /XP SP3)

Hi

I have a document. The orginial document was a PDF file scanned in and converted into a Word document.
The document looks fine but on closer inspection the document has characters amongst the words. The unusual characters look like the top right hand corner of a box. (see below screen capture) . As its a large document, the easist method would be to find and replace the character symbols. However I dont know what to search for?

any ideas?

ps I was going to paste some actual sample text into this post, when I past the symbol characters are removed )
