Mystery Dialler (Windows XP Home Edition)

Further to thread starting with post 556,004, the problem that is driving relatives mad is that they have a mystery dialler program which is running up phone bills.
It is not a premium rate dialler problem - the programme is dialling an 0845 number (this is a UK problem, not a premium rate number in the USA) but its behaviour is mysterious, to me at least.
1. The relatives say there is no noise from the modem ie they can't hear it dial while they are using the PC
2. It dials up in the background - for example in one session where auntie was using the PC offline, this programme dialled up 14 times.
3. It connects (because they get charged for each dial up attempt) but does not apparently succeed (authentication failure??) because it keeps redialling - so it looks like it's dialling, failing and then trying again.

Can someone give me a steer on a) what it might be, how to track it down and c) most importantly, how to stop it.
If it can be stopped, they won't need the rebuild (see post 556,004 and subsequent answers) which will help me big time!
Thanks

Have you installed and run the usual anti-malware programs? See Anti Adware, Spyware, Hijack.

If you want to try and solve it yourself, first look in

Cocuments and Settings<username>Start MenuProgramsStartup

and

Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsStartup

Then look in the registry (click Start | Run..., type Regedit and click OK) in

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun

and in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun

If you see something that is likely to be the dialer, remove it.
