    NAV2005 LuCallBackProxy.exe

I recently purchased NAV 2006 upgrade on Windows 98SE.
When I installed it, discovered that it only replaced my existing NAV 2005.

However, I am now experiencing "Illegal Operation" failures for "LuCallBackProxy.exe" for their LiveUpdate feature.
On shutdown I have to close this failure window 8 times.

Ran Ad-Aware and discovered that there are 4 copies running, all hiddened from the Task Manager so I can not terminate them.

Symantec Tech support has provided only a catch 22 solution.
They said use their NAV Removal tool which does not work because LiveUpdate is running. Their next suggestion was run in Safe Mode.
Only to have their Removal tool respond that it can not run in Safe Mode.

Google finds this is a know problem, yet Symantec search yields nothing.

Anyone have a solution short of going to another AV program?
    Ray A.

What a mess. Presumably they plan to fix this. As a short-term workaround, can you turn off Live Update and do updates some other (i.e., manual) way?

    Thanks,
Your suggestion worked; however, the Norton Removal Tool found my WinFax Pro and will not proceed until I remove it.
I will have now have to see if there is a way to save 3 years of Fax History.
I am just about done with Symantec products.

    Re: NAV2005 LuCallBackProxy.exe

    Ray,
The first thing you should ALWAYS do when upgrading or modifying any of the Norton products like NAV or Systemworks, is to uninstall the old one completely. And I mean completely. It manages to insert itself in many unexpected places.
So in your case, you have to revert to Plan B. Try to uninstall Live Update first. It is a separate program from any of the Symantec products. Go the usual route of seeing if it shows up in Control Panel> AddRemove. IF you see it there remove it from there.
If not, look for it at C:Program Files>Symantec>Live Update. Delete the whole folder and all.
Reboot. That should stop liveupdate from running.
Now go to the Symantec website and download these files:

Symnet.exe..the removal tool for the latest versions 2005 and 2006.
MSIFIX.bat...a fix it file for the installer
    Symmsicleanup.exe.. the residual remover...so called.
LUSetup.exe...the latest version of Live Update.
Now go to this site to download the MS Installer cleanup tool. INSTALLER CLEAN

Run the first three tools in the order shown.
    Then,
Do a search for these names.
    Symantec
    Norton
Liveupdate.( make sure it's the Symantec Liveupdate.)
DELETE any thing the search found.

Run the MS Installer cleanup and look for any mention of Symantec or Norton in the list that it will display.
If it finds any, delete them, BE CAREFUL that you only select those two names and not any others mentioned in the list.

If you are comfortable using Regedit to search the registry, then search for the same names and delete any mention of them. Most times, this isn't necessary but I included it if it is necessary.

Now run LUsetup.exe to install the latest version of Liveupdate. This should be done before installing the main AV program.

NOW, you should be able to install a clean copy of the Symantec product.

A bit of a long involved process but that should do it for you.

    Re: NAV2005 LuCallBackProxy.exe

    Bob, Thanks for your response.

I did uninstall the Norton programs when I first installed NAV.
Since I only used MS Add/Remove Programs,
I guest your emphasis on "completely" was not used.

    I have downloaded and used:
    MSIFIX.bat
    SymNRT.exe
    SYMMSICLEANUP.reg
as was recommended by Symantec Tech support.
First MSIFIX.BAT trys to rename three files, however, they were not in the Window's subdirectory the BAT file points to.
Then SynNRT.exe will not run with LiveUpdate running nor in Safe Mode.
After my first attempt with these programs, no Symantec/Norton programs, except WinFax Pro show up in the Add/Remove list.
SYMMSICLEANUP.reg uses Regedit to load a bunch of stuff,
I mean a big bunch stuff.

I took the advice of the first response from jscher2000 to my Forum entry to disable LiveUpdate and that allowed SymNRT.exe to run as far as finding my WinFax Pro program and telling me I have to uninstall it. I have that around for four years and would hate to lose my old Fax records.

    Now for a few questions:
Symantec says run the bat file before SymNRT.
Just what is MSIFix.bat trying to do?
Is Symmsicleanup.exe that you list the same as SYMMSICLEANUP.reg?
With all the stuff it is adding to my registry, what's the cleanup?

Symnrt. I have in front of me as I type, a copy of Symantec Document 2005033108162039.( titled, Removing Norton Products using SymNRT ) It says run SymNRT first, then Symmsicleanup.reg next, then MSIFIX.bat in that order. If it really makes any difference as to the order of running, I don't know but that's what it says.

MSIFIX.bat & Symmsicleanup.reg ( the SYMMSICLEANUP.reg they should be the same ) again a "snip" from Symantec's doc, they are to remove the Symantec registry entries and repair the MIS ( MSI?) files.

Adding to the reg? No, if you right click on the reg file and click "edit" you will see that it is REMOVING reg entries, not adding them, despite what the window alert says. Mostly a TON of CLSID, class identifiers, and some other reg files.

I don't know if you have been to the Syamntec website or not but there is a LOT of Tech documents there talking about these subjects.

Did you use Symantecs on line LIVE tech chat? It is better than talking on the phone with them because at least you can SEE the words printed out instead of trying to understand the heavy New Delhi accents. Also the wait times are good.

    Re: NAV2005 LuCallBackProxy.exe

    Bob,
    Interesting.
Symantec Tech referenced this same document # (Last Modified 02/24/06) and I have printed it; however, it is Titled "Using the Norton uninstall tool."
Step 1 are download instructions for the three files.
Step2, Items 1 & 2 are to run MSIFIX, Items 3-5 for running SYMMSICLEANUP and Steps 6-11for running SymNRT.

I have been to the Symantec Website, but only searched for LuCallBackProxy and got no hits.

I have been using the Symantec Tech support Email. This is too involved for either Phone or Chat.

I guess I have a choice of trying to save my WinFax data and uninstalling, or just run NAV without liveupdate.

    Ray,
In this ever changing fast paced world we live in, my copy was last update 2/10/06. What a difference 2 weeks make!

I think I would be bull headed enough to try to save the WInFax data but you can still go to their website to download the latest virus definitions and install them manually. Just remember to do it often enough.

    Re: NAV2005 LuCallBackProxy.exe

That will work fine for virus defs Bob, but without Live Update, how do you retrieve & install other program updates?

    John,
    It won't but he said he only had NAV 2006. <img src=/S/notmyfault.gif border=0 alt=notmyfault width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Re: NAV2005 LuCallBackProxy.exe

So much for the bull headed approach.
The WinFax uninstall went south on me after deleting access to the programs and the ISU file.
So now I can't use WinFax or run SymNRT, because it thinks WinFax is still installed.

Just lost all confidence in Symantec products.

LiveUpDate can be forced from NAV.
In fact when I just ran it manually, to program updates were down loaded

NAV 2005 in on the 2006 CD and installs when Win98 is detected.
