Excel forces save at close (Excel 2002, SP-1 on Windows XP)

We upgraded our company server from a Novell server to a Windows Server 2003. Now a user has problems with Excel.

    1) The red X close button at the top right of the screen is permanently grayed out. She cannot close the program by clicking on it.

    2) When she closes Excel using the menu command, it now brings up the Save dialog box. If she hits the Cancel button (not wanting to save) it brings up the Save dialog again. Excel will not close until she has saved, even if she hasn't changed anything. The computer guru has no idea how to fix this.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix these problems?

    Thanks,

Try Jan Karl's Star Post suggestions in Systematic Approach To Behavorial Problems In Excel.

It sounds like you may have something in the Startup directory or an Addin that is causing a problem.
