    CD/DVD drives not recognised

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Leif on 02-Mar-06 13:30. To change the subject to something relevant.)</P>I recently used "zapper60.exe" to remove Roxio, then successfully installed Nero 7. However, when I tried to install InCD (Nero packet-writing add-on) I ran into problems. I get the message "InCD API not loaded", and Windows no longer recognises either my rewritable CD drive or my DVD combo drive (they don't appear in the "sent to" (right click) list when copying My Docs and are no longer present as devices under My Computer. I've run a virus scan (Zone Alarm Suite 6) with up to date definitions but no viruses were found. Would much appreciate some help in getting out of this fix.

    Re: CD/DVD drives not recognised

First, repair your Windows installation. Having your Windows XP Installation CD ready, click Start | Run, type
    SFC /SCANNOW
and hit Enter. Insert Windows XP CD when promted.

Second, check your system with Nero Info Tool (Start | All Programs | Nero | Nero Toolkit | Nero Info Tool). If you didn't install it, you can download it from http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/Info_Tool.html. When Info Tool finishes to collect information, click on Drive tab and then on ASPI tab to see the problems.

If neither Windows ASPI nor Nero ASPI is not installed, download and install ASPI from http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/ASPI_Driver.html

    Re: CD/DVD drives not recognised

Thanks very much for taking the trouble to reply, kaplinb. I followed your Windows installation repair instructions, but get the message "The CD you provided is the wrong CD. Please insert the Windows XP professional CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive". I had in fact inserted my Windows XP Professional CD - admittedly it's the Upgrade version. I also tried inserted my Win XP SP2 CD, but got the same message. Can you tell me what's going wrong?

    Regards

    Nick

    Re: CD/DVD drives not recognised

I see that Leif has changed the subject, it wasn't all that descriptive <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>, and you have not given so much other information. What program/version from Roxio did you uninstall? I suppose you first did it from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.

I have found very little information about (Roxio) Zapper 6.0. A good procedure with every more or less complicated program such as CD-burning, anti-virus is to first check if the manufacturer has some recommendations, certain steps to follow to uninstall. Then start with Windows Add/Remove Programs, and follow up if necessary. There is a lot of documentation about troubleshooting at Roxio.

Roxio EasyCD Creator has a UDF-Reader that can conflict with InCD; there is a tool to disable the UDF-Reader at Nero.

For EasyCD Creator troubleshooting see: CD Recorder Troubleshooting

Now this can maybe be seen as trying to use Roxio, but the troubleshooting can also be used in other cases, uninstall. CD or DVD not recognized could be that it is already in use by another product, in this case the supposed to be uninstalled Roxio. They also mention looking in Device Manager for ghost devices. But that is probably not your problem.

Here they describe what to do if you get a message such as "No CD-Recorders were found" or "Not Accessible"; it could be that the software did not get installed correctly. Uninstall the software and clean out the upper and lower filters in the registry, then install the software again. Well, in your case you don't want to install it again.
CDROM and Recorder no longer work in Windows 2000/XP

There are so much information both at Roxio and Nero; Nero 7 in your case, have you looked at Nero 7 TOP 20 FAQs? There is a question # 16: Why do CD/DVD drives disappear from Windows Explorer after Nero 7 has been installed?

But know since I don't know how you unistalled the Roxio software (and not what software it was) and I don't know what the Zapper program does/did, so it is hard to know the status of your system.
