    AOL Today

I'm not sure this belongs here so move it if it belongs somewhere else. My problem is that when I open Instant Messenger, AOL today opens first and covers my Buddy List. I would like to get rid of AOL Today, is it possible to seperate it without damaging IM?

    Re: AOL Today

Hi Doc, I see you have a new picture, is that a picture of you?
I followed the directions in the link you sent and Show Aim Today window at startup was unchecked. So I checked and unchecked it again, hitting apply each time. I hope that solves the problem, if not expect me back. Thanks for your help.

When I start Aim today, guess what came up again? Yep! Give that man a silver dollar. Aim Today still opens and it was unchecked and rechecked, what should I do now?

    Hi Duchess,

I don't know what version you are using but I found a page that tells about a way to disable AIM TODAY. It is the 5th question on the page. I can't try it out because I don't have this program loaded. It was way to invasive for me! Hope this helps. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    <center>"When I start Aim today,"</center>
Why are you starting AIM Today ?? I thought you didn't want it to start and wanted to remove it. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    From here.....
    1) Go to AIM Preferences, click Sign on/off and put a check in Show AIM.com window at sign on, hit Apply and OK then close AIM.
    2) Reopen AIM, and click My AIM "in the top left corner of your buddy list" on that drop down menu click Select Useful Tools... "a Internet Explorer window should pop up" "may vary dependent on your browser settings" in that window click the link that says remove menu, then that window will close out.
    3) Now go back into your AIM preferences and once again disable Show AIM.com windows at sign on.
    4) Close AIM
    5) Reopen AIM...and if your followed the 5 easy steps correctly it should now be gone for good...or at least till the next version of AIM

    Re: AOL Today

    Hi Doc,

I saw those instructions too and wondered if they would work with today's version of AOL since the post was dated April 2005? It will be interesting to see if any of these things work for AOL since it is such an invasive program. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

    Hey Skitter !! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

You've got me there. I wouldn't touch an AOL product with a long stick. <img src=/S/nope.gif border=0 alt=nope width=15 height=15> I wouldn't call their stuff invasive. It uninstalls itself pretty well and doesn't seem to leave a mess behind. McAfee and Norton are invasive !!! AOL's just intrusive. You do things their way or no way at all when you are on the internet !! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Some people will tell you that Service Pack 2 is invasive and the real enemy. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: AOL Today

Hello Skitterbug- Thank you for the link, but neither version mentioned applies to my Instant Messenger version. I am using version 5.9.3861. Thanks for sending the link, sorry but it does not help me.

    Re: AOL Today

You're always teasing me, and I love it. I did not mean it the way I wrote it, but that's normal for me, wouldn't you agree?

I followed your instructions and I didn't have to complete all of them. I put the check in Show AIM.com's window at sign-on, hit Apply and OK and closed AIM. When I re-opened it, glory be to God, the Aim Today page failed to start. I've open IM several times since then and the fix is permanent.

I hope this helps someone else that may have the same annoying webpage start-up. Thanks for your help.

    Gloria

Have a look at this link and especially the message from Bierboy about half way down the page who has some VERY strong opinions on this release from AOL AIM <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

Bierboy may not have found a way to knock off Aim Today, but I did and it bothers me no more. Held a funeral for it yesterday.

    Re: AOL Today

You have made me blush, calling me such a beautiful name.

Now to get down to business. I opened AIM (My Buddy List) >Edit Options>Edit Preferences, scrolled down to Sign On/Off (under Category on the left, I CHECKED "Show Aim Today windows at sign on." (the reverse of what I wanted to do, since unchecking it didn't work). Finally clicked OK and closed Instant Messenger. Viola! No more Aim Today.

I hope I explained this satisfactorily so that every one who wants to remove it, can.
