insert object into protected document (2003)

In order to create fillable fields, I need to protect my form. But users also need to add pictures to the form and the protection blocks us from inserting an object. How can we have both fillable fields and the ability to insert objects into the same form?

In Word 2003, you can apply protection to specific parts of your document. In earlier versions of Word, this was not very granular: you protected by section. Starting in Word 2003, you have much more flexibility, but since it's not backwards compatible, you might still want to use sections. This can make a mess of a carefully design table, but if you are letting people insert objects, I guess they might already be making a mess of it. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

When you apply the protection, look for a button that lets you drill down to particular parts of the document. After protecting, test whether the function you need actually works. Some menu items are grayed out even for unprotected sections, at least prior to Word 2003.

    Does this help?

Divide your document into sections by inserting section breaks. When protecting a document for forms, you can specify which sections will be protected. The user can insert objects into unprotected sections.
