Opening Office Docs online (Internet Explorer 6 newest)

I'm running NT 4.0 sp6, Office 2k and IE6 the lastest one out. When I tryto view a word doc or excel shreadsheet I see the formatting in front of it. I noticed It does not open the MS viewer in the frame as it used to. This problem may have coinsided with upgrade to IE6, I am not sure. I've tried every setting I could think of and have reloaded IE6. Another person in the office has the same setup without theproblem. Any ideas?

Hopefully I got no responses because I'm just not very clear. Simply IE does not open either word, excel, ppt, etc.. with the correct viewer. It looks like it is treating them as text files. I've tried different associations and looked at every setting I could find....I don't see anything related. If I'm still not clear, tell me..if you have no idea, tell me that as well.

Please explain "the formatting in front of it" ?

Also are you trying to view the Word Doc from within IE 6.0?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Opening Office Docs online (Internet Explorer 6 newest)

On our intranet there are many word documents and excel shreadsheets that open in a frame, whole page or even a new window. Ideally IE opens these files with either a word or excel viewer, similar to the way acrobat reader has a viewer that pops up in your browser. The formatting looks the same as when you open a word document in notepad. I am assuming IE is not associating these docs with the correct viewer and is viewing them as plain text files.

It sounds like a problem with the browser... you might revert to I.E. 5.0, check the build of 6 your co-worker installed, and see about installing the same build.

The viewers are plugins, I never found much use for them, I alway prefer to use the actual program, (I find viewers inhibiting...) As to disabling them, I don't have much on that, (yet) I'll do a little research, but reverting to a previous version, (checking if it works,) and re-installing a good build are the steps I would take..

I reverted back to IE5.5, reloaded SP6a and tried to view an online Word doc, there was no change. The browser treats it as a text doc. It seems like it should be an association problem with the browser, I just don't see where.

In Word:
Tools | Options | General | Web Options
Everything look alright in there?

Re: Opening Office Docs online (Internet Explorer 6 newest)

I finally figured out what was going on. I assumed that notepad was the viewer of the Office products I was trying to look at, but it was Quick View Plus. I noticed when I right clicked in the document it showed the view/size menu from QVP. I removed the program integration from QVP and everything works as expected. Thanks for all the suggestions.
