    Validation Tool (XPP/SP2)

When trying to get the latest XP updates from the Windows Update site, is it normal to have to down load Microsoft's validation software more than one time. It seems that it has forced me to download it about once a month or so especially on my lap top computer.

    Thanks.

    Once a month seems "normal" at the moment. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    DocWatson,

Thanks for the reply. I figured once they validated your machine that should be it. People with dial up probably really get perturbed.

I assumed (dangerous things assumptions) that they were chasing after the hackers that find a way to workaround each version of their ActiveX control.

    Re: Validation Tool (XPP/SP2)

I noticed there were 3 new updates available on 3/1/06 which I downloaded. One was the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation update and there was one about active X controls and another Security update.

The one regarding Active X was:
    Update for Windows XP (KB912945)
This update includes minor changes to how Internet Explorer handles some web pages that use Microsoft ActiveX controls. Certain webpages will require users to manually activate Active X controls by clicking on it or using the TAB key and ENTER key. This update contains all previously released security updates. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer

This apparently was to satisfy a court order that MS agreed to do and was the result of a lawsuit from someone who said MS was using their code? There was a post from someone here in the Lounge about this but I couldn't locate it.

    Re: Validation Tool (XPP/SP2)

    Bob,

Thanks for the info. When I checked today for the updates the only thing it loaded was that validation tool again. Then after continuing once it was loaded it found no further updates available for my computer. Actually it was identical on 2 of my machines. I just thought it was strange that I often have to let it install a validation tool in order for it to check for updates.

What the site didn't do was check for Office updates and it didn't have the link available to do so. Once I manually went to the Office update site it found 2 updates available there for Outlook 2000. The Windows update site used to have a link to the Office update site but it wasn't there today. On my one machines that has Office 2003 the site is now called Microsoft Update and I was under the understanding that it was to automatically check for Office updates as well because when it turned itself into the Microsoft Update site from Windows Update site that is what I read. I'm now wondering if it is doing that. I'm going to have to manually go to the Office Update site on that machine to see what's happening.

    Re: Validation Tool (XPP/SP2)

Office Update uses ActiveX control to link itself to Windowsupdate website. When you are visiting officeupdate website (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/of...e/default.aspx) the first time, it prompts you to install ActiveX control. If it is disabled, you could not access Office update from Windowsupdate website. Check your IE settings (Tools | Internet Options | Programs tab | Manage Add-ons button and check status for "Microsoft Office Control").

    Re: Validation Tool (XPP/SP2)

I think you'll find that at present, the Microsoft Update site only indicates updates for Office 2003 and Office XP. For other versions of Office, the user must go to the Office Update Site. MS says that updates for more programs will be added as time goes on.

Whether that control is enabled or not, the user will still not be offered any updates for Office 2000 or earlier from the Microsoft Update Site. At present, updates for Office 2003 and XP are supported, but for previous versions, the user will have to visit the Office Update site.

    Kaplinb,

Thanks but I downloaded that a long time ago. It is the validation tool that it keeps making me download more often than I thought it should.

    Rebel,

That is the way I understood it also. That is the reason I was surprised to see that the link to Office Updates was no longer at the Windows Update site on my machine that has Office 2000 installed.
