All decimal formats display "N" instead of decimal (97 SR-2)

Greetings!

One of my users suddenly experienced a very strange phenomenon: When he started his computer this morning and opened Excel, all of his decimal formats displayed the character "N" instead of a decimal. This is the case for ALL Excel workbooks he opens.

We checked the font for corruption. That was not the problem. We checked the cell formatting, but Number, Currency, and Accounting all display "N" instead of a decimal point. The only way we can get a decimal point to display is by using the Custom format (something like ###.#0).

I've searched MSKB with no luck. This one has me baffled! Any thoughts? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>
