Convert Lotus with .123 extension (Lotus 9 to Excel 2000)

I see that this topic was visited in March, but with no correct answer. Neither Excel 2000 nor XP will open the newer Lotus files, which have a .123 extension; Excel only opens up to .wk4 extension. The suggested solution of simply renaming .123 to .wk4 does *not* work.

Of course, the best solution is to open the .123 files in Lotus and Save As .wk4 version. But the person in need of conversion no longer has any access to Lotus. Is there any other way to open the .123 files in Excel? A 3rd party utility or ???

    Thanks.

If you have a fast enough connection, it appears lotus has a 30 trial of its latest version available for download (352 megs).
