Zone Alarm Free Installation Problem

I had to uninstall ZA in order to correct a network connection difficulty (I said yes to uninstalling shared files). Now when I try to reinstall Zone Alarm Free, it won't work, because of missing vsnetutils.dll. I've downloaded this file, and put it into C:WindowsSystem, but that doesn't help. The balloon I get says I need TrueVector Service Manager to correct this problem, but doesn't say how I get it, or what I do with it. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Check to see if True Vector is started.
Click on Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services. Scroll down to see if True Vector is mentioned and see if it is started.
If not, right click on the True Vector item>properties. Look in startup box and drop down the menu to use automatic mode.
Reboot.

Thanks Bob: Unfortunately, it isn't listed. (Just to be sure I was doing what you suggested correctly, I looked for it on my desktop, and it is, indeed, there on my desktop compupter. So it seems to be missing on my laptop. Did I possibly uninstall a file related to it when I uninstalled Zone Alarm, including its "shared files.?"

Re: Zone Alarm Free Installation Problem

I think this can be really problematic sometimes. In certain cases one has to do a "clean uninstall", I have not been forced to do it, but there can be cases when the install before gets messed up. (Clean uninstall: C:Program FilesZone LabsZoneAlarmzauninst.exe" /clean).

Also when some people were having problem upgrading their ZA, the suggestion was to do clean uninstall. Have you looked at the ZA forum? There should be instructions for manual uninstall, see my links.

So, somehow you have to start over. The files missing indicates maybe that your uninstall before this install did not work correct (or something else is changed during this install). But it can never be the case that you removed one file related to it, i.e. too much, it should be installed during the new install.

Anyhow try look at ZA Forum. I have seen cases there that people after uninstall can not install or at least have some problem with install. Sorry I have little time at the moment to help further, maybe I can come back.

Zone Labs User Forum. Check under Installation, Uninstall and Upgrade.

If you want to fully uninstall ZoneAlarm, or if you received this from Tech Support (at Zone Labs)

Well now that the weekend is over and we know who won the Academy Awards, can you or someone please tell me how to find a missing True Vector Service.

And the Oscar for the most impatient goes to.......

Since True Vector is the heart of the ZA program and it seems obvious that you have a corrupt install of same, you should do a COMPLETE removal of the program and a clean install.

This is from the ZA help forum, have you checked it at all?
--------------------------------------------------------
Try another install of Zone Alarm but first uninstall your current firewall this way. Go into the start menu locate the zonelabs entry and right click on the uninstaller and select properties. Now in the target box you must add a space and then /clean to the end so that it looks something like this "C:Program FilesZone LabsZoneAlarmzauninst.exe" /clean click apply and then OK. Next open ZA and turn off the load on boot option, then reboot and then run the uninstaller. This should get rid of all of ZoneAlarm. Now go to your windows temp folder and delete everything. Find the folder named Internet logs and delete it then empty your recycle bin. Now download and install a fresh firewall and select a 'clean' install if it asks.

OK Bob, I plead guilty to impatience . ZA is already uninstalled; so how can I do what you suggest. It's not in Add Remove Programs, not under Start All Programs, and not in C:Program files. There is no longer a ZAuninstal.exe. I guess I could do a system roll back and start from the beginning of all of this, but... that sounds unappealing.

How comfortable are you in editing the registry? If OK, open regedit.exe and do a search for
Zone Alarm
Zone Labs

Delete all you entries you find.

Also do a search in Windows Explorer for the same entries, delete all.
Empty your temp folders.

Reboot and go for a reinstall.

Re: Zone Alarm Free Installation Problem

Good going Bob: Once again...you, and you folks on this forum RULE!!!. That did it; picking out, one by one all the Zone Labs and Zone Alarm (you have to type them in both separately) from the registry. There were about 20 or so entries. It then installed like slick ice.

Last I heard, when ZA free is running, we turn off Windows Firewall. Is that still correct?
Thanks again

Allright!

Glad to hear you are back and running OK.

Yes, disable the Windows firewall. It's limited to incoming only, not outgoing, <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

ZA should turn off the Windows firewall automatically.

You are correct. When I went in to turn it off (a few hours ago) it was, indeed, already turned off!!
