    Creating linked formula prob (2002)

I'm trying to create a linked formula by typing = and then clicking into a cell in another (open) workbook. However, as soon as I activate the other w/book Excel refuses to complete the formula. I.e. I can't click in the cell I need.
Is this something that anyone has come across in Excel, or might it be related to the location of the file that I'm trying to link to? How can I try and get around this? Thanks, Andy.

Any chance that you've started two instances of Excel, e.g. by clicking the shortcut to Excel twice? If you open workbook A in one instance and workbook B in another instance, you cannot refer to workbook B from workbook A by activating it.
