Remove some default styles (2002 SP-3)

I'm laying out a book in Adobe InDesign. The author sends me his chapters in, I think, Word Perfect, which I convert to Word, then edit before placing in InDesign. I have a procedure I go through which begins with removing all his styles in the Orgainzer (except the ones Word won't let me remove, of course). I then copy my styles from a special template into his document. The chapter I'm working on now however has Headings 1 through 9, which Word won't let me delete. I'd like to get them out of the document one way or another, however. These headings are not actually used anywhere in the document.

If you create a blank document and use Insert>File..., do those styles disappear from the "In Use" list?

If you are needing to blow away all of the formatting info in the document (but retain tables and graphics) then it would be easiest to:
    1. Open the doc in Word and remove all local formatting (press Ctrl-A, Ctrl-Q, Ctrl-Space)
    2. Change the style for everything to Normal style (press Ctrl-Shift-N)
    3. Copy the text (press Ctrl-C)
    4. Create a new file and paste in the text (press Ctrl-N, Ctrl-V)

You will still have some default styles in the Word doc but the list will be the absolute minimum possible. Are you importing or copy/pasting into InDesign?

Inserting the file into a new document got rid of the headings, thanks. And since the template I am using is also my normal.dot, all my styles are automatically applied. Don't have to manually delete any of his.
