    Puzzling PDF problem

I burned a PDF to CD for a friend, who's running ME on his laptop. Not knowing if he had Acrobat Reader, I also burned Foxit Reader to autorun the PDF. He tells me it opens OK, but that the PDF looks like heiroglyphics! This scenario has no problems on my own computer. I'm wondering if it's a font that needs installing. It appears to be a pretty orthodox Arial typeface. Any way of finding out what specific font the PDF was produced in. Or any other thoughts on what might be causing the problem?

The PDF itself is at http://nds2.nokia.com/files/support/apac/p..._APAC_UG_en.pdf

    thanks

    Re: Puzzling PDF problem

I opened this with Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard and under document properties it shows that there are many embedded subsets from a font called RotisSansSerif (and variants with -Bold, -ExtraBold and -Italic on the end of the name).

Maybe his Acrobat viewer can't cope with embedded fonts.

Using Acrobat 7 - this is what it tells me the fonts are.

Do you have Foxit installed yourself? and if so, what do you see?

    Re: Puzzling PDF problem

I have Foxit installed. Unfortunately it only shows a few scant properties. As I said, it comes up fine for me, using XP rather than (his) ME. If the fonts are embedded, I'd have thought there would be even less chance of them being a problem ???

Me too John, using the exact same Foxit reader as used on his ME laptop. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

He doesn't have Acrobat Reader Stuart - he has the same Foxit software as me. I checked out those font names and they're certainly not installed on my box, so that doesn't seem to be an issue.

Because he has no internet connectivity. Also, it may well show the same problem since it does work in Foxit on XP, but not on his ME. Could do the same thing with Acro Reader.

    Good reason. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

How about burning him a CD with a copy of Acrobat Reader on it ?? Might have the same problem... might not. Is Foxit ME compatable ??

That might have to be the next move. As far as I can see, Foxit is ME-compatible. Not sure if AR can sit "standalone" on a CD. I might have to try an older version, from Acrobat Reader - OldVersion.com. This whole thing remains a mystery, further exacerbated by the fact that I haven't seen it for myself.

    Re: Puzzling PDF problem

Well, just for the sake of completeness, I'll mention the "solution" he found. It turned out to be a magnification issue, coupled with an "odd"-sounding screen alignment issue. Bottom line is that once he managed to get the window to stay within the bounds of his laptop screen, and could access the + magnification button, all became clear, so to speak.
