Word freezes on paste from web (2000 (9.0.6926 SP-

I haven't been able to see exactly what it is that is too much to handle, but when I try to paste something I've copied from a web page, Word often hangs up the whole computer. The CPU usage isn't outrageous, so I just thought I'd give it some time, but no other programs will work except Ctrl-Alt-Del.

I'm not trying to paste images for instance, but I see that a lot of web pages have tables on them. I seem to remember reading a post about some problem in pasting with tables. Any clue as to WHAT it might be that Word is choking on, so I can try to avoid it? (PS I don't really want to copy Plain Text, although that is I suppose likely to solve the problem.)

    Thanks,

    Callie

Re: Word freezes on paste from web (2000)

I believe Word tries to re-retrieve any linked resources from the server. Although Word presumably emulates and uses the components of Internet Explorer when it does this, it's possible that there is some missing ingredient that causes the server not to respond in the same manner.

Unless you need to preserve formatting, you could try using Edit>Paste Special>Unformatted text. This should change the way Word behaves and give you instant results.

Hmm, yes I thought that might be the problem. but was hoping there was some kind of "repair" I could do so I could preserve the formatting. I'm not at all surprised at your answer and thanks for phrasing it so nicely --- that it really *is* Word that's having the problem and not me.....

One way around that you might try is paste into Frontpage or another HTML editor, and from there to Word (... if you have some HTML editor available).

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by jscher2000 on 09-Mar-06 13:31. I meant open in IE!)</P>If IE lets you save the page as a "Complete" page you could dump it into a temporary folder and then open the local copy in IE to try to work around the "going back to the server" issue. Could be a useful diagnostic, actually: If it won't paste from a local copy either, that would be highly suspicious.

Hmm, interesting idea. Do you mean copy from the page source code itself, or just from the page into the HTML editor. I don't have FrontPage (actually, I do have a trial copy of several iterations ago --- maybe this is a good excuse to break it out) but I have several WISIWYG editors and of course Notepad etc.

Re: Word freezes on paste from web (2000)

I'm not using IE but can try it in Firefox. It *would* be a good diagnostic at least, but would be pretty tedious for normal operation. The reason I'm pasting into Word (in case anyone is wondering) is to leave out the ads and navigation etc for my classes. Not all pages offer an option formatted for printing. Sometimes it works just printing the selection but often leaves something to be desired --- like a heading at the bottom of a page with the topic on the next, and the "top of page" links" that take up space, or the article is printed down the center only of the sheet, or in a small font, etc.

I tried this on another computer and it worked fine, but not only was it perhaps a faster computer or something, but it was a later version of Word. I don't seem to remember having this problem before, so maybe it's something to do with my "resources" ???

Try doing a "Past Special", it is listed under the edit menu, and use the "Unformatted Text"
This will do the paste with out server access.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Word freezes on paste from web (2000)

Yes, that works BUT I was hoping I could get the article with the formatting. It sounds like I'm just not going to be able to get what I want all the time, darn.

Thanks to everyone, for the help explaining about the most likely server access problem.

I meant simple copy/paste from the browser, not the source.

HTML editors are usually better equipped to deal with complex (or buggy) HTML.

Re: Word freezes on paste from web (2000)

When you say you're not using IE, what have you done with it? Word will be using IE components to try and retrieve the document. Do you have a firewall in place? Is it set to block IE access to the internet? Can you try opening the page in IE in the first place, and see if there are any problems. If not, does copying and pasting from IE work?

I have always found pasting from the web into documents a disaster. If absolutely necessary, I tend to copy text and pictures separately. The big problem is tables, as html tables are meaningless in plain text, and I've not found a good way to preserve the formatting whilst leaving the html behind.

Re: Word freezes on paste from web (2000)

WOW --- you've surely put your finger right on it!! I have indeed locked down IE almost totally. The only pages that can access the internet at all are in the Trusted Zone. So, duh, obviously nothing can come across from some random page I'm pasting from!! I should have remembered how tightly IE is incorporated into MS products.... Amazing how some random comment that (to me) would seem unrelated would turn out to be the absolute clue to the solution!!

Of course, all the suggestions to stop trying to paste it with the formatting would work just fine, but now I have The Answer WHY I can't preserve the formatting I wanted. I wonder if all those error reports I sent will end up making sense to anyone at MS....

Thanks again for everyone's help. Sure do appreciate even a little bit of light shed on this whole confusing "computer thing".
