    Backup utility (xp home upgrade)

My computer was originally installed with millennium, but I took advantage of the XP upgrade and got the disk from Compaq and installed the XP home edition about 4-5 years ago. The disk does not contain cd:VALUEADDMSFTNTBACKUP directory,; what should I do to get a backup utility?

Windows XP Home doesn't come with a backup utility. There are many 3rd party backup utilities; many Loungers use Acronis True Image, but there are others too. Search the Software Finds and Wants forum if you want alternatives.

Re: Backup utility (xp home upgrade)

The NTBackup utility seems to be provided only on the full XP Home CDs direct from Microsoft (in the directory you indicated!), but not on the "restore" CDs provided by OEMs.

NTBackup can be downloaded from Bob Cerelli's Windows Page.

Later... The latest version of NTBackup.exe is dated 2004-08-03 and the size is 1,172 KB. This is presumably from SP2. Probably Bob Cerelli's one is from the original XP Home?

Do you known of a download site for that latest version of ntbackup.exe? I have looked but haven't found one.

    Thanks,

Did you read John's post? The link he provided leads to the download.

No, I know of no newer, freely available, version of NTBackup online other than what is on the page I linked to. I'm not sure what Service Pack 2 added/changed in the utility. Personally I would go with what's available unless you find a problem in use.

Yes, IF you read it carefully, you will see that he clearly indicated that the version available for download was not the latest one. As he responded to me, there are probably not many differences between the two, but given the choice, I would choose the latest one for download.

I have emailed Bob Cerelli to ask him if he could put up the SP2 version of NTBackup on the website, but I have no idea whether he will do it, or even respond...

Thanks. No big deal if it isn't there, but nice if it were.
