Import contacts assigning category as we go (2002)

I have a well populated contacts folder, and now a list of email addresses. I need to end up with a contact for each email address, assigned to a particular category, the same category in each case. Some of the people already have a contact card, and / or the same email address, and may or may not be assigned to the category. There are around one hundred people in the list. Is there a easy way to import these names and have them merge to existing contacts, adding the category if needed?
    Any help gratefully accepted

Re: Import contacts assigning category as we go (2002)

I spent the last two hours doing this job by hand, exporting the contacts folder to Excel, sorting and updating as needed, adding new people, then importing the worksheet back into Outlook. It did work but was time consuming to get everything just right - especially the mapping of fields during the import, where the 'default map' option will not import email addresses correctly. Anyway, thanks to all who thought about this, maybe some interesting ideas might come out of it.
