Mail Merge - Blank Fields (Word 2000)

Is there any way to stop a space appearing when there is nothing to complete in the field.

eg - my fields are - Title Initials Surname - if there is no Title it is leaving 2 spaces before it starts Initials.

I have told it not to print blank lines where there is nothing in the field and that is working - but the spaces still appear. I am trying to do labels

    Thanks

You can use an If field
    - Display the Mail Merge toolbar
    - Delete the space between the Title and Initials merge fields.
    - Make sure that the insertion point is still between those fields.
    - Select Insert Word Field | If ... Then ... Else ... from the toolbar.
    - Select Title in the 'Field name' box, set 'Comparison' to 'Equal to' (the default) and leave 'Compare to' blank.
    - Leave the 'Insert this text' box blank.
    - Type a single space in the 'Otherwise insert this text' box.
    - Click OK.
