    MS 2005 Server question

In a meeting someone suggested that when we upgrad to Server 2005, we won't need Visual Studio any more as the reporting services are "built in." When I went to the MS virtual server, I saw that Visual Studio was installed; so if we don't go with Visual Studio, will we still be able to do reporting services?

    Re: MS 2005 Server question

It's confusing. This page doesn't clarify very well: Microsoft SQL Server: Top 30 Features of SQL Server 2005 --
<hr>"With SQL Server 2005, Reporting Services will provide report controls that will be shipped with Visual Studio 2005. Integrated reporting controls will provide improved reporting capabilities for enterprise applications."

"With SQL Server 2005, Reporting Services will provide self service, end-user ad hoc report creation, enhanced query development for online analytical processing (OLAP) environments and enhancements in scale allowing for rich and easy-to-maintain enterprise reporting environments."

"Reports that are served up by the Report Server in Reporting Services can run in the context of Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server and Microsoft Office System applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. You can use SharePoint features to subscribe to reports, create new versions of reports, and distribute reports. You can also open reports in Word or Excel to view HTML versions of the reports."<hr>
    Say what??

Yes, I can see it's confusing, but now I see what someone read that led them to believe that we didn't need to upgrade. <img src=/S/bingo.gif border=0 alt=bingo width=15 height=22>

    Re: MS 2005 Server question

I apologize for not replying sooner - it took me a while to grasp your question.

SQL Server 2005 includes its own version of Visual Studio with the Reporting Services designing functionality built in. If you already own Visual Studio 2005, this will integrate seamlessly and simply show up as additional Reporting Services tools. However, if you do not already own Visual Studio 2005, the Reporting Services-only version will be installed as a standalone.

Keep in mind that this is separate from Visual Studio 2003.
