    recovering jpg from camera

It wouldn't happen to me...but I did it! Deleted a smart media card of pics...as I hadn't overwriten the card (never used it to take any more pictures) and so with reference to <post#=556,113>post 556,113</post#> I downloaded and tried Smart Fat recovery which seemed to find the files but would only preview a window full of "y" characters and a warning undelete impossible for files with size = 0 or start cluster = 0 . A mail to their Support was speedily replied to ...try Smart Flash recovery and ignore any warnings and continue to recover and save. This produced the same result though the files I want are saved in a recovery folder and the properties show them to be jpg varying in size around 370 KB (which is about the right size) yet when I try to view them using windows picture and fax viewer there is no preview available. Another mail to Support replied that unfortunately some files cannot be recovered. and that was it. I feel that maybe the files are recovered as why would they show the size? Any ideas from anyone who may have experienced similar? The actual pictures I want are not that important, only a dozen or so, but would hate to give up on them just yet.

I don't know why that wouldn't have worked for you,. Perhaps you've managed to recover the file information but not the data. If you are determined to recover those files you might try PC Inspector Smart Recovery. It's also <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>

Thanks for that, seems a nifty little recovery tool there but it looks like the files are non recoverable. Just as well they weren't important pictures and will teach me to think twice next time before deleting.

Both Lexar Media and SanDisk provide image recovery tools with the professional versions of their CompactFlash cards (and presumably other formats). You probably can try them out even if you don't buy such a card, but I suspect they are somewhat expensive as stand-alone purchases. More info:

    Lexar - Image Rescue

    SanDisk - RescuePRO - download/buy from LC-Technology

Another good place to search or get advice on this might be Digital Photography Review's Storage and Media Forum.
