attachments changed to DAT file (Office 2003 SR2)

I send files to people in another office at the same domain. I use Outlook for an Email client. One of them uses Outlook. Four of them use Eudora.
If I send them a Word file or Excel file attachment the people who use Eudora get Dat files that can not be opened. But the person who uses Outlook gets the attachments just as they are sent. If he in turn forwards my message to the Eudora users they receive the attachments just as I sent them even though he forwards them using the same version of Outlook I use.
Can any one explain this. Is he doing something right that I am doing wrong?

If your format is Rich Text (RTF), then non-Outlook clients may not be able to decode the attachments, and will see a file named winmail.dat. Use HTML or Plain Text format instead.
