Blue Screen :( (XP SP2)

I got a Blue Screen in XP Pro SP that won't go away. Very occasionally I've gotten them, but a simple cold reboot would fix it.

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down.... *** Stop: 0x0000007E (etc."

I did a quick RAM test. Everything came back OK.

I can dual boot into Windows 2000, so that rules out a hardware issue.

Windows will get to the point right before it displays the login and blue screens.

I tied choosing "last good" and still blue screen.

What can I do next?

Kz,
What is the rest of the error message displayed when this happens?
If you Google that error message it will produce many causes for it.

Have you upgraded to SP2 and all the latest patches?

Re: Blue Screen :( (XP SP2)

Yes, I always have ALL of the SP2 patches.

Complete message continues: "...Stop: 0x0000007E (CxC000005, Oxf00394D0, OXF9E62FC8, OXF9E6cc4).

I just got into Safe Mode OK. The first time it crashed there too. Continues to BS going into XP.

I tried putting the XP CD in to see what I could figure out, but it said that the version on my PC was newer and could not continue. I sure do not want to re-install ALL of my apps.

There is no "aec.sys" or any other driver listed after the paramaters.

P.S. I'm also getting the following when booting: "BIOS update data incorrect. (CPUID=00000673). Update not loaded."

Re: Blue Screen :( (XP SP2)

None of those really apply. There is also not an error driver listed after the numbers in the stop message.

I do remember that a few days ago, I started the computer and got something like the following:

The system has recovered from a serious error.
A log of this error has been created.

Have you flashed your Bios lately ??? I turned up this page when I Googled [b]BIOS update data incorrect. (CPUID=00000673)[b].

Re: Blue Screen :( (XP SP2)

The reason it didn't go any further on the repair install is because you used the original XP CD instead of the SP2 version. Something for you to do after you get back working again is to "slipstream" the two CDs onto one updated one, so that it is at least updated to the point of the release of SP2. ( that's another day )

Did you get a CD version of SP2 or did you download it?

The one link I provided showed only ONE of the MANY possibilities that might cause a 0x0000007E error message. Also, Doc Watson's suggestion would be a follow up to your latest info regarding the BIOS update message.

Re: Blue Screen :( (XP SP2)

Doc,
No I did not flash the BIOS at all. Actually I saw that thread too.

Bob,
I do not have a CD of SP2, I just did it on-line.

Not convinced that the two are related. It just seems strange that there are no drivers listed after the code on the Stop message. So, no idea what to check.
If I boot from the CD and choose the same directory is there a Repair option or will it re-install XP? I don't really want to reload ALL of my programs (just yet).

Re: Blue Screen :( (XP SP2)

If your CD is the original XP version and you have SP-2 installed you will not be able to do a repair. If you have access to another PC I'd recommned that you investigate the slipstream option. Search the lounge or the internet for many references.

Not strange at all. Not all stop codes are driver related.

Your options are getting shorter it seems. If you can't get a slipstreamed copy of your original XP and SP2, you may have to "bite the bullet" and do a clean reinstall.

Re: Blue Screen :( (XP SP2)

Right now I'm in the middle of using Partition Magic to create a new partition for the new XP. That way the old XP is intact so I can see what programs I need to re-install. Right now, this is the only computer with a CD burner to make a slipstream of SP2. I did order a copy on CD though.

If I slipstreamed simply onto the HD (in another partition), would that be easier to load XP SP2 onto my new partition? Vs. loading XP, then downloading and installing SP2?

Each of today's reboots have not shown up any of the BIOS errors at all, but I still can't get into even Safe mode at all in XP. It looks like it goes...it gets all the way to just about ready to show the login name choice screen and BSoD.

Re: Blue Screen :( (XP SP2)

You could copy the XP CDs contents to a folder (or partition) along with the SP2 files (download them if necessary) and then burn your slipstream CD from the HD.

Re: Blue Screen :( (XP SP2)

OK, thanks.

So far so good. I have reinstalled a fresh copy of XP onto the new partition and am in the middle of re-installing all of my programs in the order of importance first (firewall, AV software, updates, etc.). Everything is working fine so far.

It's been about a year since my last fresh copy of the OS. On the bright side, this will speed the computer up again. I've heard that it's good to reload about once a year anyway. Thus I keep all my data in a separate partition so that I can reload the OS without messing with the data (even though I have good backups).

About once a week before with the old XP partition, my internet would drop off and I'd need to reboot to regain access. I wonder if that was a OS problem with that too. I'll be interested to know if that clears that up too.
